This might seem stupid but I need to be very certain before I commit. If I have the MX record pointing to the Edge server on the DMZ (which is Nated on the PIX) Do I need to have the "A" record pointing to the same IP? Or can I point the "A" record to a different public IP that is Nated on the PIX to the Client Access Server inside the network? I also need to be certain that this will work with my other Client Access Server at another location using the proxy method since it isn’t internet facing... (Will this all work with Active Sync?) What’s the verdict?

mx points to a record. a record = name = ip. bring 25, 80, 443 to a record. PIX (variety of methods) NATs that IP to the Edge or HT. 25 to edge/ht 80/443 to CAS. 80 is optional.

But can i do the mx record to the edge with one IP, and the "A" record to another IP? In other words what i stated in the begining, is this possible?

Typically you don't point an MX to an IP, you point it to the name, then a corresponding A record points to the IP. Perhaps I'm missing something here, but I've never configured MX records to point to an IP.

As t0ta11ed says, 1. Create an A record for the IP address of your edge transport server 2. Point your MX record to the A records of the edge transport server 3. Create a PTR record for your edge transport server for good measure 4. Create a TXT record for your mail domain (s) http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/safety/content/technologies/senderid/wizard/ 5. Create an A record for your CAS Server You can check your setup for common DNS problems using www.dnsstuff.com
