I am trying to install the beta2 of Exchange 2007. I have the installation files on a server (X2007). From the DC I have mapped a drive to X2007, installed MS Command Shell (Monad) and from the MSCS ran ".\setup.com /PrepareSchema". I get the error referenced in the subject line above. I think the problem is related to the fact that someone had installed a test Exchange 2003 server a few months ago, changed the schema, and then simply deleted the server (VMware). So I believe that setup thinks that there is an Exchange 2003 server configured and running, but in fact there is not. Can anyone offer some insight or help as to what I can do to remedy this and continue on with the installation? Thanks!

If you cannot bring the E2K3 Server online again, you can delete the Exchange organization using ADSIEdit from the Windows Support Tools. Since this is a test environment you can delete the Microsoft Exchange container which can be found under Configuration > Configuration > Services When deleted please try again. BTW since you can download a 120 days evaluation of Exchange 2007 RTM (both 32-bit and 64-bit), why not use the RTM version?

Henrik, I will try what you have suggested, thanks for your help. And I am actually downloading the RTM because we are a MS EA shop, but it is taking more than a day to download. I will try with it once it finishes. Thanks Joe

Henrik, I am now getting "The Active Directory Schema is not up-to-date, and this user account is not a member of the 'Schema Admins' and/or 'Enterprise Admins' group." A little background: I am running this test lab on a VMware ESX 2.5.2 server. I made VMs of 2 DCs and my current mail server (Domino 6.5). I'm not sure if this will help with the answer. Thanks, Joe

Is the account used in fact member of the Enterprise and Schema Admins groups? To prepare the Active Directory, you need both need to run Setup /PrepareSchema and Setup /PrepareAD.
