I had our hub transport server handling Internet Send/Receive just fine.

Then I deployed an Edge Server and no problem sending Internet email, BUT cannot RECEIVE ANY email from the internet the sender gets a security rejection:

#550 5.7.1 Client does not have permissions to submit to this server #

Now I obviously have searched the internet for this problem and I found a really nice article on the Microsoft Technet addressing this very problem - but it assumed I was having a problem with blocked ip's.  But when I run the Get-IpBlockListEntry it comes back EMPTY on both the Hub & Edge servers.

So I am presuming this is not the problem.

Next I found an article on Technet about Authentication - well that seemed quite non-applicable although I could be ignorant about this.

I did disable the prior Hub Internet Send connector and then I disabled the original Hub Receive connector since it was for the internet.  But then this was not working, so I enabled teh hub receive connector, yet that didn't change the behavior.

I then also re-ran Start-EdgeSynchronization just to make sure the Edge Server picked up the changes.

STILL not working.

Soon, I'm going to have to undo the Edge deployment because I can't go much longer not allowing incoming INternet mail.

HELP!!!

Well, I suppose this being here may help someone else.

Now it works fine.  But I'm not exactly sure what "thing" I did that fixed the problem.

Here is what I think happened:

Since I was using the Hub Transport Server for Send/Receive Internet mail what I did when I subscribed the Edge server was to Disable both the send and receive Connector on the Hub Transport server.

Now, the Send connector is still disabled and is not causing a problem because it is the send connector I specifically created to send to the Internet.

The Receive connector however was the "Default Server" receive connector - and I figure that has to be enabled.  And even though I enabled it again and did a Start-EdgeSynconization after that - somehow it took some time for the configuration to catch up with itself.

The only other thing I did was on the hub receive connector "Permission Groups" tab, I checked "Exchange Servers" - as the only thing checked previously was "Anonymous".  This could have been the problem since it did seem to be something with authentication, but I'm not sure why since I was allowing "Anonymous" connections.

Never the less it is working and I'm not changing anything now.

I have put all this here just in case anyone else ever has a similar problem and hope this may be helpful to someone.

Any comments by knowledgable folks would be appreciated - perhaps you know what happened and could confirm or deny some of the conclusions I have drawn.

Regards,
Barry

Connections between an Edge and Hub are encrypted and authenticated by default.

You would have to change the connectors and make them insecure if you wish to use no encryption or authentication between an edge and a hub.

So does this mean that the solution was to select "Exchange" authentication on my Hub Receive connector - and when only "anonymous" was the only method, that's what was causing the failure?
