We have a few users (using Apple mail, Iphones, Thunderbird and such) who use IMAP4. They had no issues at all until just recently, and I can't quite figure anything that has changed except the new rollup 2 (Our two Exchange 2007 servers have SP1) We have two servers, both have mailbox, client access and hub/transport roles. The one which everyone from outside connects to, for IMAP or OWA, is generally used as our CAS, where as the other one has all the mailboxes. (The reason for this set up is we are phasing one out soon for new hardware.) In any case, all was well with this same set up, and then this started to appear in the logs: Source: .NET Runtime 2.0 Error Event ID: 5000 EventType clr20r3, P1 microsoft.exchange.imap4.exe, P2 8.1.278.2, P3 481f7feb, P4 microsoft.exchange.imap4, P5 8.0.0.0, P6 481f7feb, P7 a6, P8 17, P9 system.nullreferenceexception, P10 NIL. Each time this happens, all IMAP4 clients whom are connected experience a blip, until IMAP4 restarts itself. Any help would be appreciated.

We are experiencing a similar issue, however we started looking into the server due to high CPU utilization about 3 or 4 times a day on the IMAP4.exe Have you experienced this? Also this just started about 3 weeks ago as well and we did not have rollup 2 installed yet. We installed the rollup to try and resolve the issue, to no avail.

We have also started seeing this error. I don't remember seeing it before rollup 2. This error corresponded to a client connecting via OS X Mail and getting the following message: Exchange 2007 IMAP4 server failed to retrieve the following message: Subject: ***** From: ****** Sent Date: 6/27/2008 9:31:34 AM The message could not be retrieved using the IMAP4 protocol. The message has not been deleted and may be accessible using either Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access. You can also try contacting the original sender of the message to find out about the contents of the message. Retrieval of this message will be retried when the server is updated with a fix that addresses the problem. This only seems to happen with calendar requests but I have not been able to reproduce.

I also have several OS X users and Linux users and many Goodlink Clients and ActiveSync clients as well as the normal Windows XP and Vista running Outlooks 2003 and 2007. I have only had 1 user report the same error as you listed above. He was running OS X.

Can you check the date and time the OS X user received the message and see if a .NET error was logged? Also was it a meeting request?

In my case the .NET error occurred 6sec after the message triggering the OS X Mail error was received. Based on message tracking the message was delivered to the mailbox at 2008/06/27 09:32:07 AM and the .NET error occurred at 6/27/2008 9:32:13 AM. Almost too close to be a coincidence.

Second case I had a few days ago. 2008/06/19 14:22:09 Message tracking email received 6/19/2008 2:25:52 PM .NET error Seems to indicate that the error occurs when the OSX Mail client connects to retrieve email.

I have the same issue with my Exchange box. Mine has been doing this prior to roll up # 2 though. Same .net 2.0 event messages as well. I'm getting microsoft to look at this now.

After some time with Microsoft on the phone, and them taking a few crash dumps here is what they told me. A preliminary dump analysis indicates that this may be related to an active bug which is being researched upon. Essentially the problem is caused when the IMAP4 client attempts to fetch a message, but the pointer has a Null reference. However a detailed analysis is still on-going. Soon as I get any further updates I’ll let you know. So no answer yet but it does seem to be confirmed as a bug.

I've been given a hotfix that's been running for a couple days now. It does fix the IMAP and .net crashing, however it doesn't fix the CPU unitilization which seems to hover at about 80% average. Microsoft has moved this up to engineering but has not promised a fix or a time when that might happen. Here is a snippit of the email they sent me for now... The performance issue seems to be cause by some inefficient code in the Exchange 2007 IMAP service. You hit this code with the following two IMAP commands (there maybe more, but these are the two we found in all user dumps you have sent us regarding this performance issue). UID SEARCH SEEN UID SEARCH UNSEEN We can reproduce the issue in lab environment and we have asked the Exchange development team to optimize the code to resolve this issue. Please note that this is not guaranty for a code fix from development. However, our development team will look at this issue and we will let you know when we have new information about the issue from Exchange development.

Thanks for the update. Just FYI my Case SRX080620601031 and the HotFix is KB954237 that was given to me. Is this the same HotFix you were given? If you don't mind please post your case numbers with MS as well. Thanks, Chris

Hello! I apologize for not getting back to this thread, as the issue here had become far less presistent (I think due to just less use), and so I became focused on other matters. As it turns out, one of our primary Apple users had isolated that he could crash the .Net service any time he wished by replying to a calendar invite (doing so in Entourage) and once that item was in his sent items folder, Apple Mail.app would just start spinning, trying to reconcile and then he would get the IMAP4 error. In turn, the crashes, as we all have been reporting them here, are logged on the server. I have not noticed the high CPU utilization issue, but I will report it if I do notice such. I would apprecaite if anyone would be willing to send me this hotfix, if I have trouble obtaining it myself. Thanks!

I did get word back on the final resolve. The fix is currently in engineering and will not be released until SP1 rollup 6. Ya that is right rollup 6. and rollup 3 was just released. They are refunding my money for the case. Not at all what any of us wanted of course.

Chamblin, did they give any insight as to what the problem is? Is there a KB article? Thanks, Alex.
