if i configure a windows 2000 AD network as .local because my DNS resides outside of the internal network for my .com internet domain name, does this effect my exchange 2000 server that I host in house?

Choosing .local for your AD domain namespace will be no problem for your exchange server. I prefer to use .local or .lan when I am installing W2K AD and Exchange for customers. You can even use your internet name (.com) but in that case you will have to make some entries in your (local) dns server.
Don't forget to change the e-mail address policy.
Exchange System Manager --> Recipients --> Recipients policies --> default policies.

If you choose .local
MAC OS 9.22 will not be able to resolve. With .lan its ok.
