My priv1.stm file is now at 51GB... and it keeps growing It was 30Gb about 3 weeks ago. My priv1.edb is only 11.5GB. I thought my .edb file should be bigger than the .stm file. Problem is that I am rapidly running out of space.... Damian

This article describes what is stored in the .stm file: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=232323 Basically, all internet email message body's are stored in this file initially, and if you have a lot of non-MAPI protocol clients (pop, imap) your .stm will contain a lot of data. Also, you should make sure your Online Maintenance is completeting. Monitor you application logs to determine if it is completeting. The logs will also tell you how much space is available to reclaim from the .edb and .stm files with an offline defrag. Good Luck.

Ok, problems Checked my Exchsrvr\mdbdata folder. There are about 100 named E0004BED.log and like it being created every day They are also almost 1400 files named like this FB-85C504F0-1B041526.IFS.... which have being created over the last 3 months..... There are approx 20 windows user on the network runinng MS Outlook and about 6 MAC users. Any ideas ? Maintenance is set to run every day at 4:00am How do I verify it has ran successfully ?

If you are interested in knowing that your maintainence has run succesfully. Look out for event ids 1221 in the application log Or you could run eseutil /ms "path to DB" to see the same result, multiply the result with 4kb. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/195914/en-us

I think the logs look fine, but I still dont understand what all the .ifs files are. I will check to see what client the MACs are using. Checked the Event Viewer and here are the logs. Event Type: Information Event Source: MSExchangeIS Mailbox Store Event Category: General Event ID: 1221 Date: 26/02/2006 Time: 05:00:03 User: N/A Computer: SERVER Description: The database "First Storage Group\Mailbox Store (SERVER)" has 3528 megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has terminated. For more information, click http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp. Event Type: Information Event Source: MSExchangeIS Public Store Event Category: General Event ID: 1221 Date: 26/02/2006 Time: 05:00:02 User: N/A Computer: SERVER Description: The database "First Storage Group\Public Folder Store (SERVER)" has 1 megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has terminated. It normally lives in your ExchSrvr\bin folder. You can get it off the installation media as well (or it's probably available for download at MS)

I have seen this in the past with Mac Entourage clients on Exchange 2000 BackEnd servers. refer to article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893624/en-us. for Exchange 2000 and article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/889525/en-us for Exchange 2003. And check your MAC clients to see if any messages are stuck in the Outbox folder. There are hotfixes available as per the articles above. HTH Francois

skywave, it seems you have never run thez eseutil commands evver in your life. You are supposed to go to exchsrvr\bin folder something like C:\Program files\exchsrvr\bin>eseutil /ms "path of the prive1.edb"

FAAx10 .I have installed 2003 SP2 for exchange so that should stop the problem with Mac Entourage clients. Can somone verify that the maintenance that runs daily also prunes the .stm file and not just the .edb files?
