Hello expertise exchange

i'm trying to create lab with

- 1 DC & Internal DNS server
- 1 ISA server as proxy and firewall server
- 1 Exchange server as a mail server.
- internet connection using ADSL.

everything is ok to setup,my client is able to use internet through isa server.
every client is ok to send email in internal.
now if i want to send email to another domain in external (ex.yahoo) is there anything more to prepare or create.
(just for information I have domain and dns management in www.co.cc and email server using google apps.)

thanks For helping

For external mail delivery, you need to setup either DNS forwarders in internal DNS server or make the exchange server use External smarthost for delviery.

In exchange 2003, as long as the exchange server can resolve the MX record for external domains, nothing else needs to be setup for outbound emails. You do not need to configure a smarthost unless you actually use one! As best practice, do not configure a smart host on the SMTP virtual server especially in an organization with multiple exchange servers. The reason for this is because of public folder replication. Public folder replication uses the SMTP virtual server to send/receive data between other exchange servers. If a smarthost is configured on the virtual server, then all public folder replication messages will be passed to the smarthost as opposed to directly to the exchange server(s). Use an SMTP connector if you are to use a smarthost!!

To verify if your exchange can actually resolve external MX records,  try this and post the results please:
  1. Open a command prompt and type NSLOOKUP then press enter
  2. type SET Q=MX and press enter
  3. Then type any external domain (for example YAHOO.COM or HOTMAIL.COM) and see if the results show the MX records

Example result for hotmail:

C:\>nslookup
> set q=mx
> hotmail.com
hotmail.com     MX preference = 5, mail exchanger = mx1.hotmail.com
hotmail.com     MX preference = 5, mail exchanger = mx2.hotmail.com
hotmail.com     MX preference = 5, mail exchanger = mx3.hotmail.com
hotmail.com     MX preference = 5, mail exchanger = mx4.hotmail.com

Ideally the smart host IP address should be entered as smart host on connector
/ smtp vs. You should contact your smart host to ask them for a particular ip address where you would forward smtp emails.
