If possible, you should look to expand the drive space first. Drives are relatively inexpensive. If you don't want to go that route, you should first consult your Application Log and look at the most recent 1221 Event. That will tell you how much whitespace is in your database, and represents roughly how much space you can expect to recover if you perform the offline defrag. If you only have 1GB of freespace, you aren't going to be able to run the offline defrag on that drive. Ideally you'll want at least 50-60 GB free.

Offline defrag requires 110% of free space of the database.

You can filter the application logs for event 1221 and about MSEXCHNAGEAL logs, the diagnostics loggings might have been bouced up for it. you check the same in registry:- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchaneAl

If you are not seeing any 1221 events, it is possible you aren't running the Exchange maintenance. Open the ESM, expand to your server, and a particular Mailbox Store. Right click and open the Properties. Check the Maintenance interval. If that is not being run, you won't get any 1221 events. You also won't be running the online defrag, which should be run daily.

That could be because you might have increased diagnostic logging on MSExchangeAL. Go to your Exchange Server properties withing Exchange System Manager - Diagnostic Logging - MSExchangeAL - reduce logging on all parameters.

If the database files are 39 GB in size, you would need a free space of about 110% of the database size (which is about 43 Gigs) from the path where you are executing the Eseutil /d. You have 1 GB free space in the drive where the databases are stored; what is the free space on the drive on which Exchange binaries are installed? You can also redirect the temp dfrg file that is created during Offline defrag to a drive with enough free space by using the /t parameter alongwith Eseutil /d. Check the article Q192185. So you can attach a drive with enough free space and use it while you run Offline Defrag. This would save time instead of copying the database to a different drive or machine and running defragment from there and copying it back. As for the MSExchangeAL event ids, you can check if the diagnostic loggings are turned up. If yes then turn them off to normal. Hope this helps!
