Hey guys and gals,

Two quick Noob questions here:

We have an Exchange 2003 server that has a little over 1GB of free space left on its data store SCSI drive. I had all the users cleanup their mess on their inboxes, but still no space was recovered. Is there a utility that restores some of this space? (I have read about ESEutil here, but not sure what it is or what it does).

If we get a third drive for the exchange box, how do I go about moving or spanning the folder to the new drive?

Unfortunately I am very new to Exchange, so small words would certainly help!

Thanks in advance as always!

If you're sure these items are cleaned up (not just deleted from the inbox, but cleared from deleted items and no longer appearing in deleted items recovery) you can reclaim the whitespace by defragging with eseutil... this isn't necessary, but is useful if you're going to be moving the databases to a larger volume... KB 192185 details its use... The reason exchange will not dynamically resize is because it always assumes more objects are going to be stored, so instead of removing the pages alltogether and resizing the file so that it is smaller, and then needing to extend shortly thereafter, the pages are just zeroed out, that's what is referred to by "whitespace"...

Your real solution is implementing mailbox management policies and storage limits to guarantee that your database size will remain in check...

Just out of curiosity, just how big is this database??

I'm assuming you're backing up or using circular logging so we aren't talking about a directory full of 5MB transaction logs?? Have you gone into the MDBData directory to verify that the .edb and .stm files are huge?

Uhhh...how would I know if I have 5MB transaction logs?
The server is backed up daily using a copy method, as opposed to differential or incremental.
The EDB is 25 Gigs, I believe, and the STM is 9 gigs.
I guess they're not that big in the scheme of things, but they're big for a 36GB drive!

The logs would by default live in mdbdata... reason i asked is sometimes people aren't backing up or using circular logging and their disk gets filled by the transaction logs, but it sounds like you're in good order...

Once you get a higher capacity drive in there, hit the properties of the mailbox database, under the 'database' tab you'll be able to change the location of the edb/stm files...

When you're really in a bind you can sometimes reclaim some space by cleaning the badmail directory...

The copy method of backup may not delete log files.

Do a search on the server for 5MB files ending in .log.  If you have a lot of them, then doing a full backup using Vertias Backup Exec (with the Exchange Agent) or NT backup should clear them out.

Log files are transaction logs.  If there was ever a problem with the main Exchange database, the system would replay the log files to fix the database.

Log files are deleted once the database has been backed up with a full backup on NT backup, Veritas or your favorite backup program that supports Exchange.
