Hi,

My offline defrag on Exch 2003 got to about 95% then failed with:

error -1108 Jet errInTransaction (operation not allowed within a transaction)

Any ideas?

Cheers

It's possible you have some corruption in your DB. You can either restore from a previous backup. However identifying when and if there is a corruption may be difficult. You may have to go through your event logs to see if you had any Exchange related errors, look for any background cleanup issues.

1. Restore from previous backup to a db that was good, may be difficult to identify.

2. You can also try checking the integrity of your DB
How to use the Eseutil utility to perform a checksum procedure on a streaming file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823167

2. You can repair your DB if it is corrupted using

eseutil /p
isinteg
defrag
backup

Keep in mind that any time you repair a db, it's exactly what it is, a repair. Your long term solution should be to move your mailboxes to a newly created db. Rather than running a repair, you may want to just create a new db if possible then move your mailboxes.

Thanks for the swift reply.

As you suspected the restore of backup is not feasible as I have no idea when the error crept in.

I ran an isinteg alltests fix and a eseutil /k checksum scan on the stm. Both of these processes made no difference. Is it worth doing a checksum scan on the edb? Any other specific scan?

I have 15 other dbs so I think I'll just move the accounts out and then delete the db and re-create.

You can try to perform the checksum on the edb, but say it reports it's corrupted. You can spend time doing all three which is recommended after a repair.

repair,
isinteg
defrag

This will take a while.

Your most economical move would be to create a new db and move all your mailboxes to this new db.

Hi James,

Thanks. Ok, I will move, delete and re-create. However, I've already hit a mailbox that won't move; 'information store could not be opene. The mapi provider failed...'

Is this the corrupted mailbox? What next?

Thanks
Jon

Fixed why the mailbox wouldn't move! It was disabled! Whoops.

However, I have another mailbox that won't move - simply states 'mapi call failed'. This mailbox is not disabled but it is over its size limit so cannot send or receive. I expect that is something to do with it?

You are correct about the limits.

Size limits on the destination server, including mailbox size limits, can prevent successful mailbox moves. Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition includes a 16-gigabyte limit.

Hi,

What's the process to re-create an Exchange database? I'm a bit susicious that I may run into problems; timings, deleted items recovery, etc.

I have moved all mailboxes and only have SMTP and SystemMailbox left.

I now plan to simply delete and then create 'new mailbox store'.

Is this ok?

Thanks

How do you plan on doing this just so we're on the same page. You want to mount a new store which will create a new db then move all mailboxes to this new store, you don't have to move the system related mailboxes.

Hi,

I have four databases within my Storage Group 2 (SG2). In Exchange System Manager I will right click on DB2 and choose delete (dismount first if I need to?). The following day I will then right click on SG2 and choose New - Mailbox Store completing the details as per the just deleted DB2.

Hope this is ok?

Cheers

You create the new db first. Then move all your mailboxes to this new db. Then you can dismount and delete the old db.

Hi,

I thought you could only have 4 databases within one storage group? So how can I create another db? I'd prefer to just delete DB2 and then create a new DB2 - any problems doing it this way?

Thanks
Jon

I hade the same problem. Defragmentation stopped after 70 - 90 %.
Running Exchange 2003 Std on Windows 2003 SP1.
I almost run eseutil /p but last thing I did was as followed:
  • dismounted mail database
  • stopped Information Store Service
  • run eseutil /d priv1.edb /i
  • run eseutil /d priv1.edb
  • run isinteg.exe" -s <servername> -fix -test alltests
  • run online backup

Maybe it sounds very normal but when I tried without stopping Information Store and without running  "eseutil /d priv1.edb /i" first then I got this 1108 error and the whole proccess stopped.

And
