The specs: -3GB Memory -3GHz Dual-Core AMD Opteron -Running on VMware ESX Server v3.5.0 (patched current) -Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition (patched current) -Exchange 2003 Standard (patched current) -/3GB /USERVA=3030 set in boot.ini -2046-4092 page file (system default still) -Other software installed: McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5i, McAfee GroupShield 7.0 for Exchange 2003 2007, Yosemite Backup Agent 8.5, VMware Tools This server was built from scratch in the following order: OS (patched) VMware Tools VirusScan (updated) Yosemite Backup Agent Exchange (patched, installed into existing Exchange environment) GroupShield After this, the exclusions were setup in VirusScan. Current settings are: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\McAfee\Common Framework\AgentEvents\*.evt C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\McAfee\Common Framework\AgentEvents\*.tmp C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\McAfee\Common Framework\AgentEvents\*.xml C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv1.edb C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv1.stm C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\pub1.edb C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\pub1.stm C:\Program Files\McAfee\GroupShield for Exchange\bin\ C:\Program Files\McAfee\GroupShield for Exchange\Data C:\Program Files\McAfee\GroupShield for Exchange\Data\productlog.bin C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\conndata\ C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\ C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA\ C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\EXCHANGE1.log\ C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mtadata\ C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\srsdata\ C:\Inetpub\mailroot\ C:\WINDOWS\system32\inetsrv\ C:\WINDOWS\IIS Temporary Compressed Files\ D:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA\ Description of Problem: When the machine boots, it comes up perfect (no errors, warnings, etc.) but is using *all* of the memory. This server has no mailboxes on it as of yet. I moved one small (250mb) mailbox onto it just to test but moved it off once I noticed the apparent memory issues. If I bring up Task Manager, the top 5 users of memory are: RPCServ.exe ~118MB Mcshield.exe ~64MB store.exe ~35MB services.exe ~34MB inetinfo.exe ~33MB Looking at virtual memory: store.exe ~577MB RPCServ.exe ~116MB Mcshield.exe ~60MB inetinfo.exe ~34MB svchost.exe ~24MB Physical Memory (K): Total 3145164 Available 475192 System Cache 520564 Commit Charge: 3068M / 4994M PF Usage: 2.99GB What I'm wondering is - is this normal? This machine is sitting here idle, doing nothing (0% processor utilization) but the memory is slammed. It appears to be paging at idle. Any tips, opinions, slaps in the head will be appreciated. From looking at the Task Manager, Physical Memory, I can only come up with ~500MB of my memory. Where is the other 2GB going? I apologize for the long winded post but I wanted to answer as many of the questions about my environment before they were asked. ETA: During the Exchange install (after the OS was patched current), I had to add NNTP, SMTP, and WWW components. They were added using the original installation CD. Could this be causing a problem (ie should I have used the SP cd or reinstall the SP/patches?).

Exchange will use all of the memory that is available. You bought that memory to be used didn't you? What should happen is that the memory is released when something else wants it. If that doesn't happen then something is wrong. Run the Exchange Best Practises tool on the machine to ensure that you haven't missed anything, but it appears to be working fine. Simon.
