When I shut down the old server outlook freezes up and stays at tryin to connect to server for all users.  I looked around but I couldn't really find anything similar.

Edit:  Forgot to add that yes I did change outlook to point to new server.

Servers: First Exchange Server - Server 2003 sp2 with Exchange 2k3 sp2, also DC
            Second Exchg Server  - Server 2003 sp2 with Exchange 2k3 sp2

Everything worked fine after install.  I migrated all local users to the new server and all the pop3 users were left on old server and let it go for a while cause I am a college student and didnt have much time till summer.

Then I came across this article http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Removing-First-Exchange-2003-Server-Part1.html
and followed it down to the second one.  I also took the liberty of taking all of the FSMO roles from the old exchge server and put them to a dedicated DC.

All of the Exchange Services are disabled along with SMTP, on old server, and have been for almost week after I migrated all the rest of the mailboxes over.

Suggestions:-
  • enable GC role on dedicated DC
  • using NDSUTIL to transfer FSMO (5 roles) to dedicated DC
  • updating DNS records manually
  • removing old DC records (if old DC needs to demote)
  • changing member servers Pri/Sec DNS pointing to dedicated DC
  • changing DHCP Pri/Sec DNS scope pointing to dedicated DC

My guess is that you somehow left a System Folder (did you right click your existing Public Folder Store and choose Move all replicas?) behind or your new Exchange Serverīs Mailbox Databases are set to use your old servers Public Folder instance.

If you are decomissioning the old server (and have Sp2 on Exchange 2003) you actually could try deleting the Public Folder database. If if still contains information set for replication it will bark at you.

Be sure though to have a working backup beforehand.

The first thing that flagged was that you said you changed Outlook.
If the move had gone successfully you shouldn't have to do that. I have moved thousands of mailboxes (as it is one of the main things I do) and I have to touch a few (single figures) to change Outlook. Otherwise as long as the old and the new server are alive then Outlook redirects automatically.

As for the Outlook freezing - I agree with the others - sounds like a system folder wasn't replicated properly.
However - the fact that you have Exchange on a domain controller as well isn't a good thing. When Exchange is installed on a DC things change in the way that all Exchange servers talk to the domain. The only way you will get the servers to behave without that Exchange server on a DC is to remove Exchange. The "shutdown to see if things work" method will not work.

Simon.

OL Freezes hmmmm. Lets get back to basics (as usual), does Exchange work smoothly with the old server down - so by smooth functionality i mean that there should be no errors in your event logs (app / sys).

You should have a valid GC ( i am hoping you made the new DC also a GC), else you can expect events 2103 / 2114 - source DSAccess.

You should have your Exchange server point to an independant DNS Server (not the one you shut down)

Check your NIC Card binding order on your Exchange Server (Hopefully you do not have two NICs each pointing to a different gateway, DNS servers).

Finally, have you tried to disconnect or reconnect any one test mailbox.

Run Exchange Best Practise Analyzer tool and inform us about the questions posted on this thread.

I don't sit there and watch them move. I choose the mailboxes I want to move and then go and do something else, and just check on them at regular intervals.
I do a lot of high risk moves, where downtime per hour is measures in five figures, so my fee to oversee it is peanuts. Although the move mailbox is usually the last thing I actually do, my fee has been earned before that stage.
