Hi there,

I've installed a new Exchange 2007 server to coexist with our Exchange 2003 server until we complete our transition to 2007.  I'm able to send mail from our 2007 server to our 2003 server and the internet.  I get the following error when trying to send e-mail from our Exchange 2003 server to our 2007 server:

A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients.  Contact your administrator.
           <EXCHANGE.ohca.state.ok.us #5.3.5>

I'm trying to send e-mail to a newly-created account on the Exchange 2007 server.  I used the Exchange Management Console on the 07 server to create the user and the mailbox.

Any Ideas?

Thanks,
Devon

Make sure that you do not have a smart host configured on the SMTP virtual server of the Exchange 2003 server. If you do - remove it. If you need to use a smart host, configure it on an SMTP Connector.

Simon.

Thanks for the quick reply Simon.

There aren't any smart hosts configured on Exchange 2003's SMTP virtual server.

Can the Exchange 2003 server connect to the Exchange 2007 server on port 25?
Using IP address, name and FQDN?

Do you have any SMTP connectors currently in place?

Simon.

I am able to telnet to port 25 using the IP, Server Name and FQDN of the 07 Server from our 03 Server.

There is one SMTP connector configured on the 03 Server.  It forwards all mail to a smart host (encryption device).  The address space is set to *.

Thanks again,
Devon

You need to look at the SMTP logs to see where Exchange is sending the messages. You should also check the configuration of the smart host device in case that is causing the loop.

Simon.

Thanks for the help on this Simon.  I was able to resolve the issue by setting our 2007 server as the 2003 server's smart host.

But then you can just as easily just remove the SMTP-connector all together thus forcing mailflow through the specified bridgehead server (your Exchange 2007 box) specified on the RGC between the 2003<->2007.

It sounds like you are bypassing your encryption device all together, right?

I've tested content filtering, encryption, ect. and it's all working.  This is a temporary setup while we migrate to 2007, so I'll probably just leave the SMTP connector in place for now.  Thanks for the feedback.
