check whether internal IP of the firewall is being blocked by the Edge server.
Try this command : Get-IPBlockListEntry shows.
If it is being blocked then try this set-TransportConfig -InternalSMTPServers x.x.x.x then start-edge synch....

Thanks for replying ismail but that did not work i did however find a error in the event viewer that says

Microsoft Exchange couldn't find a certificate that contains the domain name mail.****.net in the personal store on the local computer. Therefore, it is unable to offer the STARTTLS SMTP verb for any connector with a FQDN parameter of mail.nettrip.net. Verify the connector configuration and the installed certificates to make sure that there is a certificate with a domain name for every connector FQDN.

so i figure i have to make a new certificate for this

my internal domain is domainname.local and my external domain is domainname.net

i need to use the CA in windows 2003 to do this

so if someone knows the best way or has instructions on how to do this i would appricate that

i saw the stuff on technet but it is a little confusing
