I am running a Server 2003, Exchange 2003 sp2 environment.

we have a single front end server and 2 back end servers.

As of right now all mailboxes are on 1 BE server. We have a test mailbox on the new 2nd BE server. Connecting to the FE (http://FEserver/exchange) i am able to access all mailboxes on the first BE server (logging in as domain\user). when i try to access a mailbox on the new BE server, i just get prompted to re-enter my username and password.

I know OWA is working on the new BE because i can reach the mailbox by doing http://newBEserver/exchange and logging in.

i have been promised by  our cisco guy that all the correct ports are open (he is a contractor, i dont beleive him)

so my question is, what do i need to do to my FE server so that it sends OWA requests to my new BE server? Also, what ports must be opened between my FE and new BE server to allow for the OWA connection?

I would guess that it's the authentication settings on the new BE Exchange VDir.  They should be set to Basic and Integrated Auth.  Or, have a read of this:

thanks for the quick reply...

all authentication on the new BE is set exactly the same as the existing BE server.

Have a look at the article, then, and see if anything's missing.

Have you worked ALL the way through the FE/BE setup in regards to the new BE server?
Checked the FE to make sure that the port stuff is done?

Could you be more specific in what you mean by "port stuff"?

I thought I had done the entire FE/BE setup...

Is there a firewall between the FE and the new BE?  If not, then you don't need to worry about ports (unless you run a software firewall on the BE server).  Actually, since you are prompted for repeated logins, I think there is no problem with the connectivity; rather, I think there is a problem passing through the authentication from the FE to the BE.

I think you should compare the IIS log entries on the two BE servers following an attempted login on each.  The successful login will show logged usernames.  I expect that the unsuccessful one does not show any usernames.
