Add FE Server to Single Server Environment - 8.Dec.2009 2:01:01 PM

I currently have a single server including doing OWA and RPC.  I followed the instructions at http://www.petri.co.il/how-can-i-configure-rpc-over-https-on-exchange-2003-single-server-scenario.htm  to setup RPC on the single server.

I'd now like to add a FE server to only handle OWA initially.  99% of our users are OWA and I'd like to take the IIS load off the BE box.

Is it as simple as installing the FE, setting up OWA, and the SSL?  Will adding the FE affect my current RPC setup on the BE server?

Thanks!

Yes.
Installing the FE consists of installing Exchange and checking one box on the General tab of the server properties in the ESM.
Since OWA is automatically configured when you install Exchange, all you need to do is set up DNS so that your public FQDN points to the OWA website IP address.

No - adding the FE does not affect the BE server in any way.

Thanks for the quick reply.  We plan on migrating RPC users at some point, but our primary concern is OWA right now.

Obviously we'll add a new SSL Cert / DNS rule for OWA and keep RPC users on the current DNS/Cert.

You said the BE / RPC wouldn't be affected.  Are there any settings for RPC that need to be changed in the client to ignore the FE?  Or is that impossible due to the separated DNS entries?

Thanks again!

Here are a couple of articles to read through:

Exchange Server 2003 RPC over HTTP Deployment Scenarios

How can I configure RPC over HTTP/S on Exchange 2003 (single server scenario)?

Not sure what you mean.  At its simplest level...

1. Install a new Exchange server into the existing Organization
2. In the ESM, open the properties of this new server and check the box on the General tab indicating it is a Front-End server.
3. Open a browser, type in the FE server name as the URL

You should be prompted for authentication (username and password).  That's it!  The FE is functional.  You can obtain and install an SSL certificate if you choose (recommended for remote connections).  There are additional considerations - not all the services need to be running, you don't need an active Public Folder store, etc.  There are books and whitepapers you should read.  Just use your favorite search engine to look them up.
