All,

This is my first Exchange install and I am having an issue with ESMTP delivery from Exchange 07 in my internal network to an Edge server in my DMZ.  I noticed the problem when I counln't send a test message external to exchange.

I checked the message queue and received this error:

451 4.4.0 Primary target IP address responded with: "421 4.4.1 Connection Timed out."

I ran the message diagnostic tool and it found the full queue and ran the test that throws the SMTP verbs.  The tool reported that the edge server responded to EHLO like it should have, however when Exchange tried to send the BDAT command it throws the error of  "Remote socket is not available"

I ran this test again, this time using wire shark on both sides and captured the SMTP process.  Everything was fine until the BDAT command was sent.  The edge server received it, but then didn't do anything.  This led to this session timing out.

Would there be some reason why the Edge server would not respond to the BDAT command if EHLO worked?

Here is my setup:

Exchange 07 host/client/mailbox roles running on W2K3 R2 x64 w/ SP2 on internal network

Exchange 07 Edge role running on W2K3 R2 x64 w/ SP2 in DMZ network

with a PIX 515 running in the middle.  I made sure the pix is dropping any traffic.  The packets are getting to the Edge but it doesnt seem to do anything with them.

Any help would be appreciated

James
