Were getting a bounce back from one particular email address. This email address can get email through to us but responses result in bounce backs.

<exchange.ourdomain.local #5.1.8 smtp;550 5.1.8 sender HELO/EHLO FQDN must resolve>

It logs as:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeTransport
Event Category: NDR
Event ID: 3030
Date:  8/20/2008
Time:  11:13:57 AM
User:  N/A
Computer: EXCHANGE
Description:
A non-delivery report with a status code of 5.1.8 was generated for recipient rfc822;user@address.com (Message-ID <7FB13652B44A5243BF0AE5873F01636D072A83E0@exchange.ourdomain.local>).

After a few Googles and some testing I believe the issue is on our end. But I am not certain as to what the fix is.

I would appreciate any help I could get.

Hi,

The problem you have is that you sending the incorrect name when setting up the smtp session. What the other mail server tries to do is look in the dns for specific records if it can resolve the fqdn if not then you will get this message.

To solve this do the following:

- Go to the properties of the default SMTP Virtual Server
- Go to the Delivery tab
- click the Advanced button
- You will see on this page the Fully Qualified Domain Name.
Change that name to something that is properly resolveable from the outside,
such  as smtp.domain.com, where that is the name that can be resolved from the
Internet.

That solved it! Thanks.

I knew that the local address could cause a problem but I just don't understand why it happened now with that particular email server (not sure what type of email server it is... I could not telnet into port 25 though on their end). Any thoughts?

Hi,

It has to do something with anti-spam settings. You can define some checks that the mail must pass before it is accepted. In your case it checked for an fqdn which can be queried in the dns also. Because you send the internal name the IP-address doesn't point to the internal server but to the external name of the server for example smtp.domain.com
