Here is something I'm seeing a lot in my event viewer: Product: Exchange Event ID: 9175 Source: MSExchangeSA Version: 6.5.0000.0 Message: The MAPI call 'value' failed with the following error: error code That even ID 9175 is all over my event viewer - probably about 20 instances of it right after I reboot the comput. I think I've narrowed down the problem to - I can't mount my Mailbox Store in my First Storage Group for Exchange. I also get this in my event viewer: Product: Exchange Event ID: 455 Source: ESE Version: 6.5.0000.0 Message: process name (process id) file nameError %5 occurred while opening logfile error code. I think both of these events - at least the problem that reports these event ID's has caused my exchange server to just die (well, more precisly, nobody in my company can send/get email). A lot of what I've read so far says to make sure store.exe is running as a service (it is). Check permissions on certain folders (permissions are all good) - but right now, my exchange box is just dead w/nobody being able to connect via outlook or send/get email. Yesterday it was working great - today, just walked in to work and poof - stops working. Nobody has played w/the exchange box - I'm the only person in the company with access to it. I figured there was a problem when outlook 2003 was reporting: Task Microsoft Exchange Server reported error (0x8004011D) Does anyone know what's going on?? Thanks in advance all. I also read this page and all the links - but nothing helped: http://support.microsoft.com/search/default.aspx?Catalog=LCID%3D1033%26CDID%3DEN-US-KB&Product=OFF2003&LN=EN-US&SD=OFFN&Query=0x8004011D I've also read this page, but I can't make heads or tails of it since I'm not all that familiar with mounting the mailbox store and how it works and all: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/2003/wontmount.mspx

Hi It looks as it your mailbox store has some corruption which is causing it mount failures. 1. Do you have free disk space - check the drives where the database and log files are stored. 2. Check you backup has run you may have loads of log files hanging around. The backup should delete log files once you have a successfl backup. 3. Take a copy of the database files priv.edb priv.stm. 4. AV software can corrupt the databases. Don't let the AV software scan the database and log files. You need to use an Exchange aware AV to scan inside files. 5. You have two choices now. If you have a good backup then I'd restore from that, if not then you'll have to use eseutil from the commnad line to see this link http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Exchange-ISINTEG-ESEUTIL.html. I had a similar experince a while ago and it turned out to be the AV software. I'd tried to analyse why this happened. Do you have any other errors in the event log, have you got and hardware problems. Keith

Hi Khowlette - thanks for your reply. 1. I have enough drive space (2 drives in the computer, each has over 100GB of free space) 2. I don't use the backup feature that comes with exchange or SBS 2003. I use Veritas backup exec and I have my entire C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr folder excluded from the backup 3. Copies those files - actually copied the entire C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA to another drive (for safe keeping). I'm assuming the files in that folder ..that's where all my email is stored. 4. I have my AV software set to exclude the entire \program files\Exchsrvr folder and all sub-dir's 5. I tried running the ESEUTIL util to defag the DB and here's my results: C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\bin>eseutil -d "C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA\priv 1.edb" Microsoft(R) Exchange Server Database Utilities Version 6.5 Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. All Rights Reserved. Initiating DEFRAGMENTATION mode... Database: C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA\priv1.edb Streaming File: C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA\priv1.STM Temp. Database: TEMPDFRG3840.EDB Temp. Streaming File: TEMPDFRG3840.STM Operation terminated with error -550 (JET_errDatabaseDirtyShutdown, Database was not shutdown cleanly. Recovery must first be run to properly complete database operations for the previous shutdown.) after 4.0 seconds. I read somewhere, that means I have a dirty database (??). I can uninstall the AV software today and tinker w/the computer -that's not a problem (just to 100% rule out the AV software). My event viewer isn't showing any hardware issues - ...just this wacko 9175.

You have 2 choices: 1. Restore from a backup. 2. Run ESEUTIL /P against the PRIV1.EDB and PUB1.EDB. Then run ISINTEG -FIX -sservername -test alltests against the above databases.

Not to sure on how to restore from a backup (well, I probably could in a couple hours), but I think I'll give the eseutil /p a try and see how that works out. I'll let ya know how it goes. quote:

Well, restore from a backup I had done on 12/20/05 didn't work. Of all the damn folders and files I backed up, I had to set it to NOT back up the C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA folder. Oh well. It's been my understand that backup software should be skipping that folder - unless I'm wrong? Anyhow...attemping to do a ESEUTIL /r now and i'm a little lost. Here's the files in my \mdbdata folder: E00.chk E00.log priv1.edb priv1.stm pub1.edb pub1.stm res1.log res2.log When I run the eseutil /r - I get this: C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA>eseutil /r e00 Microsoft(R) Exchange Server Database Utilities Version 6.5 Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. All Rights Reserved. Initiating RECOVERY mode... Logfile base name: e00 Log files: <current directory> System files: <current directory> Performing soft recovery... Operation terminated with error -528 (JET_errMissingLogFile, Current log file missing) after 1.46 seconds. I've been assuming, my "e00.log" file is the log file - but perhaps I'm mistaken? that -528 error says I'm missing my log file - so now I'm confused. Isn't a log file a file that ends in .log? LOL. I'm a newbie w/this eseutil thing. Can someone help me out? Thanks in advance.

Do the following: 1. Run ESEUTIL /P <databasename> against the PRIV1.EDB and PUB1.EDB files. 2. Then run ISINTEG -S <servername> -FIX -TEST ALLTESTS Run this against both the PRIV1.EDB and PUB1.EDB. 3. MOVE all .LOG and .CHK files from the MDBDATA folder into another folder. Make sure you check all the drives. 4. Now try to mount the databases.

Now as to the backup: You are right to exclude the EXCHSRVR folders from the file level backup. The databases would not be backed up anyway since they are active. You need to use an Exchange Aware backup program. Windows backup can do this. If you are using a 3rd party backup program then you will need an Exchange agent to backup Exchange. See this link for backing up and restoring Exchange using Windows Backup: http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Exchange-2003-Backup-Restore-NTBACKUP.html This is for Exchange 2003 but will also apply to Exchange 2000.

Hi, Sorry, not offering a fix for your problem, I've just been there myself a few weeks ago. Nothing we did would recover the mail. I ended up creating a dial tone DB on the exchange so everyone could send and recieve new mail and then we started restoring from users local .ost files by converting them to pst and writing them back to the server. We run in Cached mode, so were able to use this recovery method. It is labour intensive as you need to visit each PC or talk the user through it over the phone. We had 14 mail boxes that had not been accessed for a couple of weeks and eneded up buying a recovery package ( link below) worked very well even thought our priv1.edb was corrupt it pulled out quite a bit of the lost mail. I think it cost 700 UK pounds, expensive I know, but it worked of us. http://www.officerecovery.com/exchange/ I'm not connected with this company in any way, just used their product to get us out of trouble. These is a demo version you can download which will test if it can recover anything. I tested it with the demo version first before parting with the money. Rgds Mike

Thanks Mike, Since my company has now gone through their 1st diaster, and learning the hard way, we'll invest in some type of disaster recovery software or something to prevent this or fix it quick in the future (and what I learned over the past week about email, exchange, and outlook was probably more than I ever wanted to know..but it's good to know now). quote:
