I've got Exchange 2003 installed under Server 2003 Enterprise in a VMWare test environment. This is nothing to do with my production network and is purely for testing/disaster scenario purposes.

So far I've done the following:

- Set up and configured a dummy exchange environment
- Two mailboxes and sent a few emails between each
- Took a backup of Exchange using ntbackup
- Rebooted into Safe Mode Command Prompt and deleted the entire contents of the Exchsrvr\MDBData folder
- Rebooted the server back into Normal Mode.
- Checked ESM and information store dismounted as expected.
- Set the store to allow a restore
- Opened ntbackup and restored the stores - no errors at all
- Opened ESM and tried to remount the mailbox and public stores

I get the following message each time I try and mount the stores:

"An internal processing error has occurred. Try restarting the ESM or the MS Exchange Information Store service, or both. All services running."

All of the services are running and I have restarted the server.

Any ideas what I can try next?

For info, I ran the eseutil /mh command and the status for the mailbox and public store is dirty shutdown.

When you ran ESEUTIL/MH, check the log required section of the output. This will let you know which log files are needed in order to bring this database to a clean shutdown. In fact please post the results of that command.

details of eseutil /mh results for both priv1 and pub1:

To confirm - I simply deleted the entire contents of the mdbdata folder from safe mode and then restored the entire contents from backup using NTBackup

any ideas how to get stores to mount?:

You still having issues on this?

So it looks like they both need log files to be in a clean shutdown state. The mailbox database needs one log file and the public folder needs log files 2 to 4. What log files do you see in the folder?

I have the following .log files in the folder (restored from the backup):

E00.log
res1.log
res2.log

Just to recap what I did:

1. Installed and set up Exchange. Sent a couple of test emails between two accounts

2. Backed up Exchange via NTBackup

3. Booted into Safe Mode and deleted the entire contents of the MDBDATA folder

4. Booted back into Normal Mode, set both mailboxes to allow overwrite be a restore

5. Restored Exchange via NTBackup

Thanks for your help

I believe you don't have the log files required by the database in your back up.
YOu will have to perform a hard recovery on your database.

In that case restore the log files from your back up to a temp location. You will get a restore.env file at this location.

Check this article for further commands.

Very weird.

The backup I'm restoring is a backup of exchange right before I went in and deleted the MDBDATA folder so I don't really understand why the log files would be missing.

Having said that, I'm going to set up a fresh copy of win2k3 and exchange in vmware and re-create the scenario just in case.

Exchange recovery tool is an advance, easy to use and cost effective application to repair and rebuild corrupt or damaged Exchange server database (.edb) file. The software effectively handles all the corruption and Exchange disaster situations. After repairing the damaged database file, you can directly mount it on the server. http://www.filesrecoverytool.com/exchange-edb-recovery.html
