I have an exchange server (not sure which version) Exchange server manager says 6.5.7226.0. I have a user@company.local The default email was setup as user@company.com.au MX entry on webhost set to company.com.a I changed the default email for the user to differentusername@company.com.au in server management. I created differentusername@company.com.au email address on my webhost I can send using differentusername@company.com.au but replies are not retrieved from my webhost. Any ideas? I've done a search and there are various threads about this problem, but I don't seem to get anywhere from following the discussions.

First, let's start by saying that Exchange 6.5 is Exchange 2003. You've come to the right forum. Let's talk about your situation. Are you able to receive any mail addressed to company.com.au? Your description makes it sound like only one renamed user is the issue, but I can't help but wonder if the problem isn't bigger than that.

actually now that you mention and now that i think about it, the other emails are setup to be used bypassing our exchange server (pop /smtp).. I will have to check now to see if other users can recieve email into their exchange email inbox.

[[ignore the small print I made a mistake... ]] Actually I thought about it too much. The other emails work fine through the exchange server. eg for the user: admin@company.com.au they recieve emails correctly through exchange. its only the differentusername@company.com.au that doesn't work. I have tested this also with differentusername1@company.com.au who's exchange email doesn't seem to work properly either..... (i set that one up too .... i think theres a pattern there) Thats great that I fluked the right forum! Does it have anything to do with the fact that the email address has a password on it on my webhost? I mean there doesn't seem to be a place to put in that password on the exchange server.

If you perform a DNS lookup from a system completely outside your systems, do you see the correct MX information? If so, what happens if you perform a manual Telnet transmission test?

To perform the telnet test: Run NsLookUp from outside your network. Default Server: xyz.company.com Address: xyz.xyz.xyz.xyz >set q=mx >mycompany.com.au Non-authoritative answer: mycompany.com.au.com MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = server.mycompany.com.au telnet server.mycompany.com.au 25 {Hit Enter} Mail From: user@mycompany.com.au {Hit Enter} RCPT To: user2@mycompany.com.au {Hit Enter} Data {Hit Enter} Test Email {Type .} {Hit Enter} quit Check if the email gets delivered to your system.

Hi thanks for the reply! I managed to follow upto the telnet part as it starting giving errors. I may have failed to clarify that my MX record appears to be working ok to the webhost. as in I can send and recieve mail from my webhost ok using the webhosts webmail feature in its control panel. We can also use regular pop and smtp from our work. Also incoming mail to the email address appears in the webhosts mailbox, but just doesn't seem to get downloaded by our exchange server. There is an MX entry setup on our webhost. But do I need to setup an MX entry on the exchange server, on our work server computer as well? I entered (from my home computer not on the work network): >NSLookup Default server: Speedtouch.lan (my ADSL modem) Address: 192.168.1.254 >set q=mx >mycompany.com.au Server: speedtouch.lan Address: 192.168.1.254 Non-Authoritative answer: mycompany.com.au MX preference = 0, mail exchanger = mycompany.com.au mycompany.com.au nameserver = ns1.mywebhost.com mycompany.com.au nameserver = ns2.mywebhost.com mycompany.com.au internet address = 33.333.333.333 (made up ip) ns1.mywebhost.com internet address =33.333.222.222 ns2.mywebhost.com internet address = 44.44.44.4 >telnet mycompany.com.au Server: mycompany.com.au Address: 33.333.333.333 DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds *** Request to mycompany.com.au timed-out .....

Non-Authoritative answer: mycompany.com.au MX preference = 0, mail exchanger = mycompany.com.au Does this return your Exchange server.mycompany.com.au OR simply mycompany.com.au quote:
>telnet mycompany.com.au Server: mycompany.com.au Address: 33.333.333.333 DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds *** Request to mycompany.com.au timed-out It should be === telnet Exchange.domain.com 25 and not telnet domain.com without port number mentioned. I am a bit confused - since both the following comments looks to me contradicting. quote:
"as in I can send and recieve mail from my webhost ok using the webhosts webmail feature in its control panel. We can also use regular pop and smtp from our work. Also incoming mail to the email address appears in the webhosts mailbox" quote:
I can send using differentusername@company.com.au but replies are not retrieved from my webhost.

Hi again, sorry for the confusion. The webhost is a paid web hosting service with some email storage on the webhost. MX records are setup for the webhost My Server is the Server at work (with Exchange on it). ie: homePC--[WWW]--MyWebhost--[WWW]--Exchange Server--WorkPCs My problem: I can send mail from WorkPC to HomePC However replies only make it to the Webhost and are not downloaded for distribution by my exchange server. My theory is that the MX record is working to set webhost as the end point of incoming mail. So perhaps I need to setup my exchange server to pull it from the webhost?? I'm doing nslookup from homePC and yes mail exchanger = "company.com.au" not "server.company.com.au" I can't get the telnet command to work now.
>telnet Exchange.mycompany.com.au 25
[i]Unrecognized command: telnet Exchange.mycompany.com.au 25

How do I setup the MX to point to our exchange server? If our exchange server is off will the emails be stored on the webhost instead? Thanks

How do I setup the MX to point to our exchange server? First, you need a public IP address that will accept SMTP (TCP port 25) traffic. That could be your Exchange server directly, or a NAT rule on a firewall or router which forwards to your Exchange server, or another SMTP gateway. Second, you need a DNS entry (an "A" record) which associates a FQDN to that IP address. Please note that this has to be a publicly accessible DNS, which is typically not your internal DNS. Third, you need a DNS entry (an "MX" record) which associates a value to the "A" record named above. As before, note that this has to be a publicly accessible DNS, which is typically not your internal DNS. Fourth, you should have a reverse-DNS entry (a "PTR" record) which associates the IP address from above to a FQDN that names your registered domain. This is for outbound mail. Once again, that this has to be on a publicly accessible DNS, which is typically not your internal DNS. With the above configured, if my mail system were to perform a DNS lookup, it would find your MX record, associate that to the A record, which associates that to an IP address. That is where my system will attempt to send the mail. quote:
If our exchange server is off will the emails be stored on the webhost instead? That's up to your webhost. You need to check whether it will or not. If you set up your MX to point to Exchange and Exchange isn't there, messages will bounce. If you want the mail to go to the webhost as a secondary target, you create a second MX record with a higher value associated to an "A" record which points to the webhost IP address.
