We are using XWall. Last weekend we recieved an update that changed some settings so that many of our emails that are sent from form postings on our web site got marked as SPAM. These emails got sent to email enabled public folders. I have rules on these public folders to delete anything with [spam in the subject line (which XWALL adds.) Then the emails get forwarded to whomever handles posts for that site.
Problem: Emails deleted by the rule do not appear in the Recovered Deleted items option. (Other emails I delete do appear there so it appears to be something with the rule deleting them.)
I can see the emails in the Message Tracking Center in the Exchange System Administrator. So I have ID numbers for the messages. Is there any utility out there that will let me retrieve a message using its ID # or are these messages truly gone.
Retention on the folders is 7 days. I don't have to actually recover the email but I do need to get to the message part of the email so I can copy it and forward that on.
PS - I've tried the option presentented in KB811358 which did not work.

We have Exchange 2000 but I did check the settings and actually it was set to 24 days retention on public folders. I can recover items that I delete but I can't recover items that the rule deletes.
Anyway, I have disabled the delete rules on the spam so it won't lose anymore email, but that means spam sent to the public folders gets forwarded on. Ugh. Never was able to recover the emails mistakenly marked as SPAM.

If your spam server was deleting the files then you probably wont be able to retrieve them as most spam is processed before exchange even knows about it.
Can't you set your spam filter to quarentine spam messages so you can view them before deleting? that way nay false positives can then be released and sent to exchange to be delivered.

XWall does not delete the emails. It adds a [spam ...] tag to the subject line. We then use "Rules" to redirect the SPAM emails.
In users Inboxes the rules typically redirect the emails to a SPAM folder which then has archive rules that deletes the emails after a few days. That way if they are expecting an email and don't get it they can check their spam folder.
On the public folders I had a couple of rules. The first being to delete the emails with [spam in the subject line. The second rule forwards the email on. If it was Spam, then it gets deleted and never gets forwarded on. I could move the spam emails to a different folder but there didn't seem to be a point since there aren't archive settings on public folders. Wish there were, that would solve several other problems. That still may be the best solution though since at least I wouldn't be forwarding on any Spam.
Anyway the point of the matter is I can recover items from a public folder that I delete but I can't recover items in a public folder that were deleted by a rule.

Gotcha.
Was the rule set to permanently delete the spam items? If you have the proper rights to the folder that the rule was applied on you should be able to un-delete any item deleted unless the rule permanently deleted the items.
