I recently migrated from Exchange 5.5 to 2003 (two separate servers).

I had thought I had verified replication settings on everything - making sure 2003 was there and 5.5 was removed.

I removed both Exch5.5 and its ADC from the old server (all mailboxes and public folders were moved to 2003)

Now I cannot remove the old 5.5 server from my Exch Org.  It still shows up (all grayed out).

By going through system mgr piece by piece, I have found a spot where old 5.5 is still listed in the replication.
If I go to folders->public folders->system configuration and look at the replication tab, both old and new servers are listed.  If I click on the 5.5 server and click 'remove', it asks me for admin username and password.  When I enter that it asks again.  It's like it's trying to verify with the Exch5.5 server, which is no longer there.

Is there any way, within ADSIEdit or something, that I can manually remove this server from the replication tab?  I'm thinking once it's gone, it will let me delete the 5.5 server from the org.

All mail and public folder functions are working perfectly on 2003 box, but I cannot remove the old 5.5 server and it's bugging me.  Any help would be appreciated.
thanks
-Brian

i beleive that you need to run the 5.5 admin from a 2003 box
attach to one of the new 2003 servers and the delete the 5.5 from there
but i think this is required before you remove the adc

When I try to install Exch5.5 admin on 2003 box it won't let me - says something about that it is not supported in that version of windows...  If I try to install Exch5.5 on a win2k box, it asks me what exch server to connect to, I tell it my new one (since the old one no longer exists) and it dies at that point (the exch5.5 admin install).

So I'm back to square one again.  Thanks for the reply, and any other help would be appreciated.

You need to install the Exchange 5.5 admin from the Exchange 2003 CD.  You can run the exchange system management tools setup and select Exchange 5.5 admin to install.

yep as stated by potcy

run the setup - you will get 2 boxes about issues on version - just ignored  (get this if it's sp1)

select custom install
select the 5.5 admin tools at the bottom
make sure you remove all other ionstall parts - it tends to want to install some 2003 bits and you dont need these
let it run
and away you go

The same thing happened to me. I tried installing the 5.5 Admin tool from the 2003 CD (on a different 2003 server from Exchange .. because I'm paranoid) but the old 5.5 server object doesn't show up there. It shows up in the 2003 System manager though.

I've both the 5.5 and 2003 admin tools installed on the non-exchange server. Does that make any difference? Should I have installed it on the Exchange server itself perhaps? I decided to stop messing about before my apparent lack of knowledge got me into serious trouble, but the event log errors complaining that the old server doesn't exist are really bugging me now, so any bright ideas would be really, really welcome!

iso i've only done this in testing and then once live

have you removed the adc?
if you have then i can understand it doesnt see the 5.5 but if it's in place then you should see it

Thanks for the response. I had a look and saw that the ADC was also gone. I tried a few searches, etc to see if I could reconstruct that somehow (maybe build a new 5.5 box with the same name or something?), but came up empty. Does anyone know if it's possible to just purge the server from AD / E2K3?

I'm now at the same level as pdunlevy.

I got Exch5.5 admin installed from exch2003 CD (thanks potzy!).  I removed the old 5.5 server from within there.
But it's still showing up in Exch2003 system mgr.  My Exch5.5 server is gone, the ADC is gone, so I don't know where to go from here.  Everything's still working great on Exch2003, but the old 5.5 server is still listed.

I found a spot in systme mgr where old 5.5 server is still listed in Replication tab (woops).
When I try to remove it, it asks me for admin password.  No matter what I put in there, it won't accept it.  Is this because it's trying to authenticate with old Exch5.5 server which is not there?  I know 100% that the admin username/pswd is correct, but it won't accept it.  Strange.
Thanks everybody so far for all your help and suggestions.
Brian

yep you needed the adc to tell the 2003 that the 5.5 was gone

i assume your exchange is stuck in mixed mode then and it will want the service account pwd

Yes, exactly.  It wasnt the admin password but it won't accept it.

Can I install the ADC back on it, or am I past that point?
Is there anything I can do now that I broke it?

I'm thinking there HAS to be some way to fix this, via ADSIedit or something.
I would bet if I opened a case with Microsoft they could tell me how to do it, but my company doesn't want to spend the $, especially since everything is working alright fom the front-end.

Any ideas would be appreciated.  Thanks everyone!

yes i think there will be an easy way with adi edit
dont think there is any way about reinstall of adc as you will not get the agreement setup as the 5.5 isnt there
it's the agreement that would replicate the notification of the 5.5 deletion

the call to m$ isnt that much
199 quid from here  - $99 i beleive across pond
free if you have a technet sub - 2 calls anyway

i would think it waould be better to fix when it's not an issue rather than when it becomes one
ie you will not be able to install additional exchange servers just now as it will want the5.5 service account
to install
you cant get it native etc
i would think it would be a quick fix for an exchnage guruu
