I had to create a new email adress for a contact. After doing so, I set the new address as the primary address. When I try to remove the old address I get an error that says "This is the home email address of this recipient. It cannot be removed".

I made this change a few days ago and I still can't remove the old address. When a user sends an email to the contact they get an error referring to the old address, which is no longer a valid address, even though it is not the primary address anymore.

How can I remove this old, non-working, address?

If it is a contact, delete the contact and recreate it.

Ok. Kind of a bummer! I have a lot of contacts who's address can change often. But ok, thanks a lot Simon!!

As far as I am concerned, Contacts are disposable. If something changes then create a new contact. Saves a lot of problems.

I understand, but we have a large sale force who I don't host mail for. I create contacts for them and I complete a lot of the fields in the contact file, like address, phone numbers, location, etc. So I have to recreate all that data too.

Try editing the existing email address instead of adding a new one and then changing it to primary. If you need to, add the original email back in as a new address after the change.
