I just installed Exchange 2007 into our existing Exchange 2003 organization and everything is working fine except for free/busy information. I've replicated the system folders (OAB & Schedule+ Free Busy) to Exchange 2007.

1) 2003 Mailbox users cannot see any 2007 Mailbox users free/busy schedule, it shows lines through it ands says "No free/busy information could be retrieved". They can only see 2003 Mailbox users free/busy schedule.

2) 2007 Mailbox users using Outlook 2003 are able to see the free/busy schedule for 2003 users but not all the information shows up for 2007 Mailbox users only some of the items are showing up (better than no information).

3) 2007 Mailbox users using Outlook 2007 are able to see the free/busy schedule for both 2003 & 2007 Mailbox users.

Any ideas?

It sounds like replication. Not all of the information is replicating correctly between the two servers. Is replication working correctly? Are other public and system folders replicating correctly?

Simon.

Every public folder we have has replicated fine to Exchange 2007. I checked the system folders as well and they have replicated over. I've checked the event logs on both servers but there are no warnings or errors. Any other ideas?

How did you check the replication? The only reliable method is item count. Anything else will not give an accurate response.

Simon.

I'm using the EMS command Get-PublicFolderStatistics and am verifiying the item count as you mentioned.

I'm having a similar issue but I don't see a Schedule Free Busy folder lists when I run that command.  I'm using Outlook 2003/Exchange 07 trying to view free/busy data on users with Outlook 2007/Exchange 2007.  I assumed the availability service saved free/busy information to their public folder.  When I view their system folder in ESM 2003 I get 'The page cannot be displayed' (we're running a mixed 2003/2007 environment).   Is it mandatory that I replicate my free busy system folder in Exch2003 with their Public Folder db?  I thought if it wasn't replicated it would just take a few seconds longer to look up the info.  I'm still fairly new with this so bear with me..

If you are using any Outlook 2003 or older clients then you must replicate all of the system folders. They are not optional.

Ok thanks.

I've discovered the Public Folder Management Console and the proper folders are there just there are no objects in them.   I've checked that the mailbox stores have public folders associated with them.  There are about 20 users all using Outlook 2007 in that administrative group. Shouldn't the availability service publish data to the public folders for backwards compatibility?

1) 2003 Mailbox users cannot see any 2007 Mailbox users free/busy schedule, it shows lines through it ands says "No free/busy information could be retrieved". They can only see 2003 Mailbox users free/busy schedule.

This is possible only when PFs replicate across between 2 PF Servers (2k3 MBx and 2k7 Mbx servers). Hence, check if there is a RGC connecting both 2k3 and 2k7 Servers.

2) 2007 Mailbox users using Outlook 2003 are able to see the free/busy schedule for 2003 users but not all the information shows up for 2007 Mailbox users only some of the items are showing up (better than no information).

Basically, OL 2k3 are not able to see complete information of their own users on their own server - I would recommend using Outlook /cleanfreebusy switch for affected users in this case.

3) 2007 Mailbox users using Outlook 2007 are able to see the free/busy schedule for both 2003 & 2007 Mailbox users.

Again, this does not make any sense since Availibility Service would again contact PFs to retrieve / publish information for any 2k3 users, with regards to mailboxes on 2k7 - A.S would directly pull the info from their own mailboxes (NO PFs come into picture for OL 2k7 on E2k7).

Sembee, what if there was no Exchange 2003 to replicate from?

If there is no Exchange 2003 server then you have to ask why. If you have removed it then you obviously didn't follow the procedure to remove the server correctly - which outlines what needs to be replicated to the new server.

It's just a hypothetical question.  If you had Exchange 2007 with Outlook 2003 you would need the Schedule + Free Busy folder in place for free busy to work.

According to http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2006/10/23/429296.aspx

Note: In order to maintain backwards compatibility, Exchange 2007 mailboxes using Outlook 2007 clients will utilize the Availability service for retrieving data, but also publish to a free/busy public store, since legacy clients also need to retrieve free/busy data.

So how do I view the contents of the Schedule + Free Busy folder in 2007 to make sure it's being populated?  It's easy to see in ESM 2003 because I can simply click on the contents tab.

You shouldn't be able to see any contents in Exchange 2003 either - that applies to all system folders. They hold the data in a format that cannot be read.
The only way to know if there is content is to do a get-publicfolderstatistics and see if there is an item count. If it is zero then it isn't being populated.

I am aware of what the article says.
If you went straight to Exchange 2007 fresh then you need to choose public folder support during setup so that it can be created. If you were migrating from Exchange 2003 then you need to replicate the system folders to the new server.

We have a child domain that has Exchange 07/outlook 07.  We (the root domain) have Exchange 2003.  They can see our free/busy data but we can't see theirs, just displays the diagonal lines.  They have firewall.  They have a public folder database.

I have not setup their server as a replica of our Schedule + Free Busy *yet*.  I was going to do this during our next downtime.

Do they need to add our Exchange 2003 server as a replica to their PB database?  If so, how?

Why are you waiting for the next downtime window to add the server to the list of replicas? It doesn't affect the users at all. I replicate all system folders to all Exchange servers in the org. You can use ESM on the Exchange 2003 servers to add the Exchange 2007 server to the list of replicas.

Last time I added a replica all free/busy information disappeared from the perspective of users on servers that it was replicating to.  It was fine once it was replicated but I didn't stick around to see how long the replication took.

So me adding their server to our replicas will also add our server to their free/busy replica?  They're in 2 different administrative groups.. the legacy and the new 2007 one.. not sure if that makes a difference.

I haven't seen data disappear when adding servers to the list of replicas, and have done it many many times. Replication of Public Folder data isn't affected by admin groups. Therefore just add the servers and wait. Replication shouldn't take too long unless you have a lot of users and a lot of free/busy data to replicate.

I second Sembee on the part that by adding Free/busy replica data NEVER disappears, i have done more than 250-300 odd PF Replication issues and never have come across any such scenario.

More over, if you ever had the user loosing free/busy data - then by default every 15mins OL re-publishes data on to the server - running a simple OL /cleanfreebusy would have solved your issue ASAP.

However, lets not get into the nitty-gritties of what happnd in the past. Current goal is to work with the replication of free/busy between E2k3 - E2k7 and thats imp since both the servers lie in two different AG and hence as per free/busy concept ATLEAST one sitefolderserver should hold the replica list of their own server & the same server should hold replica list of sitefolderserver of ALL OTHER AGs existing in your ORG.

I have added their Exchange server as a replication partner in our Exchange 2003 administrative group (in the free busy system folder).  This has not made a difference.  It's been over an hour,  I would think that it should have shown up by now.

Do they need to add our Exchange 2003 server as a replica to their PB database?  If so, how?  They can see our free/busy, we just can't see theirs.  They're all using Exchange 2007 with Outlook 2007 and we're using Exchange 2003.
