I have an Exchange 2003/2007 environment. The internal mailflow from 2003 to 2007 and from 2007 to 2003 works great. The mailflow from 2003 clients out to the internet also works great. I can recieve email from the internet to both 2003 and 2007 clients, but I can not send mail from 2007 clients out to the internet. I did create an internal SMTP connector to the exchange server 2003 from the 2007, but it just creates a loop. I read alot about smarthosts, but I dont know what that is, nor do I know if I have one. Is there a way to route all outgoing email from exchange 2007 clients to 2003 and have 2003 send it out? Also I am running ISA firewall 2004, is there anything on the firewall I need to consider? Thanks.

route all the mail out of the 2007 server. create a send connector for internet traffic, and then remove the 2003 VSI instance..

VSI? Virtual Server? I guess I dont understand completely? How will the 2003 mailboxes know to go out using 2007?

We have recently upgrade from Ex 2003 to Ex 2007, everything works fine i.e. like moving of email boxes, decommissioning of Ex 2003 etc. Our Outlook 2003 user have no problem in receiving both intenal & external emails but NOT sending during the transition period and after the decommissioning. Although we setup a "internet" connector to handle outgoing email, failed. We are now using OWA for email communcation. Any suggestion?

Any server can discover where the Send / SMTP Connector is created - this is the concept of Transport's own mechanism. So, if you have a RGC (routing group connector in place between E2k3 / E2k7 ( and i would assume it works smoothly) - your problem should be resolved if you create a E2k7 Send Connector and remove the connector / VSI instance for sending emails outside. That should be it

As per what you are stating Emails are not being able to send outside. So, do you get any NDR / Errors reported in app logs / SMTP Queues failing ? Is the issue happening with OL 2k7 users ? How many users are being affected ? Does a profile recreation help ? Did you create the send connector using the following link ? How to Create a New Send Connector http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998662(EXCHG.80).aspx Please run the Exchange Best Practise Analyzer tool. www.exbpa.com

Yes, we received sys msg saying that the email could not be delivered to the receipient and the error code is [0x80004005-00000000-00000000]. All users (2k3 & 2k7) are affected and they have to use OWA to send & receive emails. Profile recreation did not help. The send connector was created using document similar to that from your recommended link. Any idea?

Can you please paste the exact NDR what you get. also please run the Exchange Troubleshooting Assistant tool. Increase diag loggin on Transport and lets check the events. Also, would it be possible to reboot your Mailbox and Hub role owner (server).

When I used Exchange Troubleshooting Assistant to track emails that were sent using OWA & Outlook, the log displayed the correct ServerHostName for email that was sent using OWA but displayed different ServerHostName (e.g. recepient's email address is xyz@yahoo.com, the ServerHostName column shows gmta.yahoo.com) when I clicked next it said gmta.yahoo.com could not be found. nslookup & telnet show correct information.

Problem solved by moving email boxes to newly created information stores. Thx for the inputs.
