Hello - very frustrated chica here. I have set up SBS 2003 for a small, local company. They purchased NetGear Firewall/Router as well. I set up Exchange, and they are able send/receive internally with no problem. They can RECEIVE external mail, but they cannot SEND external mail. External mail sits in the queue waiting "for response from remote server".
Now, I have forwarders set up in DNS. The forwarders point to the DNS Servers provided by the ISP. In event viewer I continue to get 7063 errors stating the forwarder IP Address does not allow recursive queries. I have a ticket in with the ISP, but in the meantime I wanted to check with the Board here and see if I have missed any steps.
On my SMTP virtual server, under Authentication, all three boxes are checked. Under Relay, I have "allow all computers that successfully authenticate to relay, regardless of list" checked.
Oh, and port 25 is open on the router. Have I missed something on my end, before I chew out the ISP?

I'm having the same problem for days now. This is so frustrating. I have resorted to connecting all outlook clients directly to the ISP's email server. Lucky we are not so big

change your forwarders in DNS to 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 then restart DNS service and flush/register dns via cmd prompt
try and telnet outbound open cmd prompt and type
telnet mail1.microsoft.com 25
u should get a banner back if not then let me know
make sure ur smtp connector has an address space of * and not something else....

Thank you! I was able to get a banner after completing the steps you submitted. However, I still see messages in the queue. I'm playing with it however. Get back to you in a few minutes.

The mail is in Retry state. I right click and select "Force Connection" but it eventually returns to Retry state after some time.

also make sure you dont have external dns configured on the VS.
try to relay off your ISP to...
get there relay address from them and see if that works... they may be blocking ur outbound 25...but if they are blocking it u can still relay off them... try the above first then try to relay off ur ISP

At this time there is no Anti-Virus solution. I am able to see the MX records for microsoft. And, I don't believe I have eternal DNS configured on the SMTP Virtual Server. I have another ticket in with my ISP, but they have assured me during previous conversations that they do not have port 25 blocked. I will be calling the ISP (again) this morning, and I will update you on what their response is.
Thank you again for all your help.

Below is a snippet of the SMTP log file. This series of commands is repeated throughout the entire log file:
06:17:25 210.153.205.96 EHLO - 250 06:17:25 210.153.205.96 MAIL - 250 06:17:25 210.153.205.96 RCPT - 250 06:17:28 210.153.205.96 DATA - 250 06:17:28 210.153.205.96 QUIT - 240
It's TRYING, but failing...Ugh.

I have a same problem and no external DNS server configured, I have diabled the AV feature for Real time checking for internet , Exchange and File server but still the problem persists help me. If i restart the server it works for few days may be 3 or 4 days and then it stops by itself the mails are stuck in the queue.
