Hi. I'm not an exchange admin, but I do have to send mail to exchange servers. For some reason, no exchange server will recieve mail from me. It's not the smtp server or the mail client as I've tested multiple ones. I've also telneted and done a manual session. The biggest problem is, it returns no errors. But the mail is never delivered. Here is a sample of sending email to a hotmail account

telnet mx1.hotmail.com 25
Trying 65.54.166.99...
Connected to mx1.hotmail.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 mc9-f27.hotmail.com Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 5.0.2195.6824 ready at Sat, 7 Feb 2004 08:34:12 -0800
helo there
250 mc9-f27.hotmail.com Hello [24.49.24.75]
mail from:bob@bangular.com
250 bob@bangular.com....Sender OK
rcpt to:bangular@hotmail.com
250 bangular@hotmail.com
data
354 Start mail input; end with <CRLF>.<CRLF>
this is a test to see if the account works
.
250 <MC9-F27SQGQQiC9BJma000a66a4@mc9-f27.hotmail.com> Queued mail for delivery
rset
250 Resetting
quit
221 mc9-f27.hotmail.com Service closing transmission channel
Connection closed by foreign host.

Looks like a successful email to me, yet the account never recieves the email. This problem is with all exchange servers. I'm not the only admin to have this problem either. I know of a few with this problem (none of us run Exchange however. We either run postfix, exim, or sendmail).

Could the problem be with your reverse lookups? Many businesses are now enforcing reverse lookups when accepting delivery.

Your host name resolves to fl-psl1c4-75.stu.adelphia.net, yet your sending as bob@bangular.com.

I would guess this is not an exchange issue. I believe AOL has implemented reverse lookups...try emailing them as a test.

*sigh* I was thinking that might be the problem. No, I can't send to AOL either. I'm running off of a non-business isp and I don't have authority over my ip address where I could implement reverse DNS lookups. Is there anything I else I can do?

You might check with your ISP if they have a smtp relay server which you can use. Then configure the SMTP Virtual Server (or SMTP Connector if you use one) to use that server as smarthost. This means all outbound email will go throught the ISP's server (which I assume has proper reverse dns configured).
