Hi...

My company's mail service was being hosted by a third party vendor. I built an Exchange 2000 server so that we could host our own mail services.

I have had the guy who hosts our external DNS server change the MX record to point the the public IP address of the new mail server.

I am able to send mail out, but it does not appear that I am receiving any mail (I'm trying to send from a Yahoo account).

What have I missed?

I am not able to ping the MX entry as I was when it was pointing to the old server. In otherwords, I can't ping the public IP of my Exchange server, but I know it is up and running because I can send mail out. Perhaps I need to make a change on my firewall (SonicWall)???

The only other things I can think of are:

1) Something is not right on the external DNS server

2) I missed something when configuring mail Exchange server.

Any help you can offer will be most appreciated.

One additional comment about the fire wall...

I have set up One-to-one NATing (static route) that points the public IP to the private one and I have allowed incoming SMTP traffic to the Exchange server.

It sounds like the SonicWall is configured correctly. You can also (temporarily) create a rule to allow ICMP Ping to the private IP of the mail server. And then try to ping the MX HOST record.

Another good test is to run nslookup at a command prompt

c:\nslookup
>set type=mx
>yourdomain.com

and then check the results to see if the MX change has been made and has propagated. Most likely it has not.

c:\telnet mail.yourdomain.com 25
is another good test for MX and firewall settings. ie make sure it can connect.

Once you get that working you might want to allow 80 or 443 to the mail server for OWA assuming you don't use a front-end server.
