Hi,

Due to MS lunacy in not supplying an Exchange aware backup with Exch2k7, I've resorted to attempting to back it up using ntbackup on an xp pro machine.  This is done by backing up the remote store.  I've tested this method in a test lab and it works great.  However on my production server, the backup fails with the following errors:

quote:

Operation: Backup
Active backup destination: File
Media name: "Exchange2k7FSG.bkf created 16/11/2008 at 22:29"

Backup description: "Set created 16/11/2008 at 22:29"
Media name: "Exchange2k7FSG.bkf created 16/11/2008 at 22:29"

Backup Type: Normal

The operation was ended.

Directories: 0
Files: 1
Bytes: 762

The operation did not successfully complete.

Everything I read on this error points to database corrupt so I have run the following:

Eseutil /mh - this shows the DB was in a clean shutdown state
Eseutil /g - the database passes the integrity test no problems.

Without running eseutil /p to repair what appears to be a non corrupted DB or using ISINTEG –fix -test alltests again on what appears to be a non corrupt DB, I'm at my wits end.

Any ideas.

Thanks  Neil

Hi,

If only life was that simple.  That KB refers to Exchange 2000, not 2007 and while some troubleshooting is still the same in Ex2007, this article reference stm files which Exchange 2007 no longer has.  Incidently Google was the first place I went and have looked at dozens of pages, most of which suggest running eseutil as above.

Many Thanks

Neil

So 2 things here really.

1. When you install Exchange 2003 or Exchange 2007 on Server 2003, it extends NTBackup with the necessities to back up Exchange.  This means that you need to use NTBackup from the Exchange Server.  There is a way around this which you can probably figure out by reading the following:
http://cs.thefoleyhouse.co.uk/blogs/karl/archive/2008/02/10/how-to-backup-exchange-2007-on-server-2008.aspx

2. When doing a Remote Streaming Backup against Exchange 2007 SP1, you need to apply a registry modification to allow remote streaming backups.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998870.aspx. Towards the bottom look for section called Changes for Streaming  Backups.

This change was already made so that was not the issue.

This jogged my memory a bit.  My test PC has Ex2003 admin tools install, the production network did not.  I install Ex2003 system tools on my XP PC and hey presto it works!  The Exchange aware NTBackup is included in the Exch2003 admin tools.

So to summarise, to get Exchnage 2007 on Server 2008 to backup using NTBackup on an XP Pro machine:

1.  Install Server 2003 Admin Tools on XP
2.  Install Exchange 2003 Admin Tools on XP
3.  Install Exchnage 2007 32BIT Admin Tools on XP
4.  Modify the registry on both Server (to allow streaming backups) and XP (to direct XP to correct DLL's)
5.  Run NTBackup to backup remote store.

Thanks to all.
