When I open exch 2007 management console on one of the servers, the following error occurs:

Could not find any available domain controller in the domain <domain name>...

In fact that server is a domain controller, GC server, DNS etc. There is also an additional domain controller, GC server, DNS, WINS etc on site and part of the same domain.

If you open the exch man console on the other server (exchange 2007 SP1 also installed), it opens successfully, however no actions can be perfomed, eg mailbox moved.

domain connectivity is believed to be runnign successfully from both servers. i.e. can access the sysvol, ping the domain name etc.

Any assistance or direction would be most appreciated.

server setups
-windows 2003 R2 x64 SP1
-exchange 2007 SP1 x64

Do you mean exchange 2007 is installed on a DC?
Is System Attendant service started?
did you tried running DCDIAG,NETDIAG and EXBPA?
are you able to create users.
Let me know what events are you getting in application logs?

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, exchange is installed on a DC, although it is the secondary DC.

System Attendant is started

DCDIAG and Netdiag both pass OK.

EXBPA? unsure of this.

Yes, able to create users, but mailboxes, unsure as none of the mailboxes can be seen in exchange.

error events only seen in applications (DNS,Directory Service,System all OK):

If Exchange is installed on a domain controller then it will ONLY use itself for DC functionality. Therefore is the server also a global catalog? If not then it must be. It will never use any other domain controller for DC functionality. I would also suggest that you have DNS on the server and the server is pointing to itself for DNS functionality.

Is there any reason why the server was installed on a Domain Controller?
DO NOT take that as an instruction to remove the DC functionality, as that is not supported and will break Exchange.

The best practises tool can be found in the Toolbox.

Goto any workstation that is already a member of the domain and type
echo %logonserver% from the command prompt. See if you can see the DC name.

If it comes as workstation name, then there is a problem at domain configuration level.

If the DC's are working as expected, you can try changing the configurations from the EMC.
Right click Organization configuration and select Modify configuration domain controller. Do the same for server configuration. Hopefully that should resolve the problem.

I tried as you suggested aus_aus2001 - thank you. From all workstations, it reads <name of server2> but with no domain name suffix. If, however I run this command from the exchange server in question, it lists its self as the domain controller (which is actually a domain controller, but is not the master for any of the master functions).

I went through and checked the replication between domain controllers a while back and from my limited knowledge everything seemed OK. I have reached a dead end with my knowledge now! Any further suggestions most welcome!
