Ack... After several failed CCR installations, I've now gotten into a situation where I cannot install an active node... My only option on both nodes is to install a passive node, which subsequently fails because the active node doesn't exist... It's acting as if some vestige of the cluster is incorrectly reporting the presence of the active node, even though there's no AD object... Below are snippets from the ExchangeSetup.log (I can provide more if needed):

[5/22/2007 8:42:45 PM] [0] Setup version: 8.0.685.25.
[5/22/2007 8:42:46 PM] [0] This machine is part of a Windows failover cluster.

[5/22/2007 8:42:46 PM] [0] The server is cluster type: 'Passive'.
[5/22/2007 8:42:46 PM] [0] The requested cluster type: 'Active'.
[5/22/2007 8:42:46 PM] [0] The installation mode is set to: 'Install'.
[5/22/2007 8:42:46 PM] [0] Setup will search for an Exchange Server object with name 'SRVEXV1'.
[5/22/2007 8:42:47 PM] [0]     Clustered Mailbox Server
[5/22/2007 8:42:56 PM] [1] Setup failed previously while performing the action Install.  Looking for the failed task with ID 2a84ae11.
[5/22/2007 8:42:56 PM] [2] [ERROR] The operation could not be performed because object 'SRVEXV1' could not be found on domain controller 'SRVADC2.contoso.com'.
[5/22/2007 8:42:56 PM] [1] Setup is halting task execution because of one or more errors in a critical task.

[5/22/2007 8:42:56 PM] [0] The Exchange Server setup operation did not complete. Visit http://support.microsoft.com and enter the Error ID to find more information.

do you currently have Exchange in production?

Have you checked in ESM to determine whether the 2K7 install created an object?

I've had to manually remove "SRVEMX2" from my Exchange2K3 ESM.

good luck!

Thanks for the advice... It turned out to be a RPC configuration issue... For firewall reasons, we had (over) constrained the number of TCP ports that were allocated to RPC functions.  After changing the number of ports via RPCCFG to allow 100 TCP ports, everything went swimmingly.
