Hi All,
I am pretty new to Exchange 2000, but we all have to start somewhere, don't we... I'm having a problem and it goes like this. I installed E2K with AD and DNS, and all the things you need, for a company ABC with domainname abc.com
Now, before we transfer to this new mailserver (and throwing the old one away) and I wanted to test everything : internal mail and outbound mail is working great, for testing inbound internetmail (i cannot use abc.com yet, because it has to be up and running for business purposes), I thought maybe i can point the mx-records of my test-domain, xyz.com, to this server and add this domainname to the recipient policy and give some test-users both email-adresses (test@abc.com and test@xyz.com).... And you can guess what is happening... well, nothing much... Those users do not receive a thing! What could be wrong and how to solve this? Will the mail on abc.com fail to? I tested with telnet on port 25 on the internal network, that's ok... I tested with telnet on port 25 from the internet over the router and i could not connect that way? Could it have something to do with our router? I have our ISP configured the router so that port 25 is redirected to the E2K-server...
Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks,
Tim.

Hello!
I'll try to give some advice.

I think the problem could be in your DNS

If you want to use xyz.com for your test domain, you have to register that domain name in your external DNS, Have you done that? (and mx record...)
The Client you use to send mail with, have to point directly to your external DNS.

J have a test domain that is working. the domain running in the company is abc.com,
test domain test.abc.com (reg. in ext DNS)
Host record=mail
The MX record = mail.test.abc.com
E2k installed on a test DC, domain test.abc.com

Sorry, my English i BAD, hope you understand.....!

Hi Mick, Hi Monica,

You were right, Monica! It was the DNS-setup... It was configured right, but I was being too impatient... I tried to send mail again (a few minutes ago) and ..TAAADAAA... mail is coming through. I guess, the DNS-changes of my testdomain weren't replicated over the internet yet... I'm a happy man going of to bed! :-)

Tim.

Could you give me some advice on doing this please. (External DNS and MX records)

Thanks in anticipation
P.S. your English is good

Hello!
First to Timber, glad to hear it works for you!

MickA!
Can you give me some information abuot what you want to do? Then I can give you more spcific advice about how to set up your DNS. Is it only for test, or do you want other to send mail over Internet? What have you done so far? (If I know that it's easier to se what's wrong, and why it's not working)
Post it here, or you can send me email about it

Hi Monica

Sorry for being vague but I feel that I am getting a bit out of my depth and just trying anything.

It appears that I may have problems with my SMTP virtual server settings as I can not even telnet to it on port 25 (should I be able to ?)

I was also told by demon tech support that I should stop the SMTP service as this is stealing my mail from Exchange. If I do this then the SMTP Virtual server within Exchange is disabled. Something is definitely downloading the test mails but they are not showing up in Exchange.

Can you shed any light ?

Regards
