Hi I need to change the ip address of an exchange server 2003 to another ip in another sub net. Which are the steps required to acomplish this task sucessfully? The EX2003 is in an Active Directory 2003 native (I'll also change the ip address of the Global catalog). Thanks in advance for your cooperation. Kind Regards MP

If it's in another subnet, make sure everything needing to connect to the Exchange server can route to it (servers, workstations, auxiliary systems). Is this where the inbound mail is received? You'll need to update your MX record. If the inbound mail is received by another system, then you shouldn't have to change your MX. Do you have more than one Exchange server? More than one Routing Group?

Thanks for your posts. This is an one Exchange Server 2003 SP2 with only one routing group, and it's an cluster.

Hi, I wonder if someone can help me. Our Exchange Server 2003 recently crashed and forced me restore a backup in another server with different IP and subnet. This resulted to VPN users unable to access their mailboxes. I am planning to change the IP address of the working Exchange server back to it's original IP address and I want to know if this is just a matter of changing the ip address and reconfiguring DNS entries. Our exchange server is a DC but is not clustered. Appreciate your help. Reggie

Your users connect to the VPN and then what? Do you use Outlook as your client? If the server now has a different IP address, have you already attempted to change DNS to point to the new address?

hi uemurad, my users connect to our netork through VPN and access their mailbox via outlook client. Unfortunately, the ip address of our exchange server is in the DMZ and they cannot access their mailbox. That is why i want to change the ip address to be in the internal network again. I have not changed the ip address yet because i read somewhere that it is not that straight forward. I am also avoiding going through all workstations to reconfigure the client. I want it to be transparent to them. thanks, reggie

If you change the IP address from the DMZ to internal, does that mean you are going to move the server back to the internal network? Why is your Exchange server in the DMZ in the first place? That seems unnecessarily risky. If changing the address isn't going to have routing implications, then why not just add the internal IP address to the server instead of changing it?

To ReggieMancia, Have you now assingned the previous IP address to the new server yet and if so did it cause any problems? I am going to perform the same change shortly!

To ReggieMancia, If your users are able to connect to their mailbox successfully from LAN,then I cannot think of any issue with the configuration part. You need to check the config in VPN Server and add the new IP Address of your Exchange Server whereever the old IP is present. This could fix the issue.
