I installed Exch2010 with a colleague's unused product key (mostly for test purposes).  Now that I got my server up and running 100% perfectly, I'm loath to reinstall.

I cannot seem to change the product key to my legit one.  The applet in EMC is gone, and the command I used (below) to change it in EMS doesn't work.

Here's the error (personal info redacted):

[PS] C:\Users\administrator.domain\Desktop>Set-ExchangeServer -Identity mail.domain.com -ProductKey XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-
XXXXX-XXXXX
The Exchange server "MAIL" is already licensed.
   + CategoryInfo          : WriteError: (mail.domain.com:ServerIdParameter) [Set-ExchangeServer], InvalidOperationE
  xception
   + FullyQualifiedErrorId : 77E7CDDB,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.SystemConfigurationTasks.SetExchangeServer

Can anyone help?

hi mate,

One of our MVP James had posted solution:
Summary: Exchange 2007 fails to mount additional databases after you've created 5 Storage Groups. In additional, you get Event ID:9589 "Exceeded the max number of 6 Storage Groups on this server."

You have verified that your Exchange 2007 Edition is Enterprise in the EMC GUI.

Resolution:

Re-enter your product key in the Shell and restart your information store.

[PS] H:\>set-exchangeserver -identity dcex01 -productkey XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX

WARNING: The Exchange server "DCEX01" is already licensed.
WARNING: The product key has been validated and the product id has been
successfully created. Note: This change will not be complete until the store
has been restarted.

Thanks for the reply, but I already tried that command in EMS.  I tried using the FQDN as well as the NETBIOS name.  Same error each time (in the first post).

I guess I'll just keep using it until MS gripes at me.  Kinda sucks...

Not sure.  I think I have Enterprise installed (not sure how to tell, Help > About is useless).  The version I have licensing for is Standard (again, pretty sure.  It's through MSDN).

How to determine the version number, the build number, and the service pack level of Exchange Server

Im sorry to say that you cannot downgrade the version from ENT to STD by entering a new Product Key. If that is what you are attempting to do, you are facing a reinstall of Exchange.
