We currently have 2 Exchange 2003 servers in 2 locations (local & remote). I am wanting to use our SAN to create a new 2007 clustered environment in the local location and remove the remote server. I have one spare server to start with however I will not have the second server until I move the mailboxes from the remote location. 3 questions:

Can I start the cluster with 1 server and add the second one when all mailboxes are moved to the new 2007 box then add the other one after that is complete, reusing the remote Exchange 2003 server (64 bit)? Basically create the cluster but don't add the passive till later.

From what I understand I will need 2 additional Hub Transport servers to make this fully redundant and AD will handle clients sending mail if one were to go down?

The Client Access role would not even be needed unless I use OWA, Activesync ot RDP?

Yes you can create a clustered mailbox server consisting of a single node, then add the second node later on. And you're correct in taht you need at least two Hub Transport servers (and two Client Access server although they can be installed on the same boxes as where the Hub Transport server roles are installed) in order to make it fully redundant.

The Client Access server role is also used by Outlook 2007 clients (both internal and Outlook Anywhere), which relied on the AutoDiscover and Availability services in order to function correctly. So you should have at least one Client Access server deployed too.

Thanks Henrik. I read some conflicting information regarding the need for the Client Access role. Some say it is needed, some say it is not. It makes sense that to use autodiscover, it would be needed. At least it can run with the Hub Transport roles, that is a relief.....
