this would be PERMANENT config, not a temporary. These two environments will have to coexist for some time so I am looking for the hidden things I may not be aware of or some incompatibility I have yet to read about.

1 forest/domain, 2 physical buildings on two continents. Currently both sites have 2003 exchange.

Building 1- I will migrate from two exchange 2003 server to two 2010 (one for edge, the other for rest)
Building 2 - will keep 1 exchange 2003 server (same as now)

currently:
- all emails from outside come into Building 1 -> exchange 2010
- if recipient is in building 2 it will be sent there
- if recipient is local it ends up in a 2010 database

when building 2 sends emails out -> I want it to leave their building without having to go to building 1

when building 1 sends emails out -> it goes out through their internet connection

I don't see why not, but if anyone can confirm I would really appreciate it. I am preparing everything for my migration, but without a lab (which sadly I just cannot setup due to $$$) I am going to be doing this live and having building 2 drop off the map and not receive any new emails or not be able to send would be a major issue

one thing I am not sure about is the outlook web app/OWA, since one of the 2003 I will be decomissioning is doing OWA will the 2010 outlook web app be able to access mailboxes in building 2? I hope so, otherwise I will have to setup OWA in building 2 I guess with its own DNS name/public IP , no big deal , just extra work.
