Hi
I have recently migrated all mailboxes and public folders to the exchange 2000 server. We host 2 domains for our email system. Staff members have an alias with the second domain name in addition to the primary email domain address.
The following NDR happens when email is sent to non-existing email addresses in the secondary email domain:
A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients. Contact your administrator. <exchange2kserver.mydomain.com #4.4.6>
We only have 1 exchange server????????? I have searched technet and the solutions they provide are not relevant to 1 Exchange server senario.
Any advice will be appreciated.
Regards Vivienne

Just a question: Have you registered both e-mail domains in DNS and your recipient policy?

Yes, both have an mx record pointing to the new exchange 2000 server.

So, do you have both e-mail domains registered in the default recipient policy in the Exchange System Manager?

Yes, I have a default policy set to lowest in which the secondary domain is listed but is not ticked. Then an additional policy for the format of email address creation which is set to the highest. In this policy there is no reference to the secondary domain as not all users need that email alias set up.

Yes, a smtp connector to a smart host. The secondary domain is listed in the address space.

That's the problem, you send a message to an e-mail address in the second domain that does not exist, since address lookup in AD is unsuccesfull Exchange looks where to go and finds that e-mail to this domain should be sent to the smarthost, your smarthost receives an e-mail bound for your secondary domain and know to send all e-mail bound for your secondary domain to your Exchange server, and so on and so on...you have the mail loop that your error indicates.
Solution: I believe this will fix it. Remove the secondary e-mail domain from your SMTP connector address space tab, you probably already have * defined there that will handle e-mail for any other domain than the ones your Exchange server is configured to handle.

Okie dokie, removed the secondary domain from the smtp connector and address space tab. Restarted the Virtual SMTP Server (not exchange services, as server is live). It has been an hour, I sent a test mail and I am still getting the NDR:
A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients. Contact your administrator. <exxhangeserver.mydomain.com #4.4.6>
Do I need to restart all the Exchange services for the change to take effect?

Vivienne did you tick the option "attempt direct delivery first before sending to smarthost in your virtual SMTP server"? This should prevent the mail loop you experienced
Cheers,

If that does not work you have one sure way of getting rid of this problem:
Use the "Catchall" mailbox sink event for Exchange 2000 described in "HOW TO: Create a 'Catchall' Mailbox Sink for Exchange 2000" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=324021)
This sink forwards any mail sent to any unassigned address in a domin to any mailbox that does exist that you choose to receive this mail.

Thanks, I will try the "Attempt delivery first" option, that wasn't set on the Virtual server, as the smart host configuration was only in the SMTP Connector. I have entered the smarthost name and selected the above.
Lets see what happens. If that doesn't work, I will try the next options.
Thanks for your help

Hi
I have tried all the suggestions apart from the catchall mailbox. I am not sure that is the solution. I simply want the NDR to state:
"The e-mail account does not exist at the organization this message was sent to."
and not to loop and then send an NDR stating:
"A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients. Contact your administrator."
Here is a summary of what I have changed: - the 2nd domain no longer appears in the address space on the smtp connector (all mail sent to smart host) - I have unticked "this organisation is responsible for all mail delivery to this address" on the 2nd domain in the recipients policy (there is only the default policy set to lowest) - I deleted a second recipient policy set to highest that had no mention of the 2nd domain in it.
Mail is being sent to the 2nd domain email addresses that are valid, but those that are not valid loop and then get a 4.4.6 NDR stating: "A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients. Contact your administrator."
Any more ideas or suggestions? Thanks for the help so far.
Regards Viv
