I am running a single Exchange 2007 Beta 2 server without a separate Edge Transport Server. I need to configure my server instance to allow both authenticated SMTP traffic (relaying by POP3 clients) and un-authenticated SMTP (for inbound email). When I first set up E12 Beta2 (in a non-Edge Transport server scenario - that is, stand-alone), no one on the Internet could send inbound email. They simply got an SMTP 550 permission denied error (presumably because they didn't authenticate).

So, I got clever and deleted the default and created a new Receive Connector with the intended use as "Internet" for all remote IP addresses (with the
default authentication checkboxes checked {the first 4 checkboxes}). This works great for inbound smtp mail from places like hotmail, and other non-authenticated sources.

Unfortunately, pop3/smtp users are not able to send any email - even though Outlook is properly configured with user login information and all of the
authentication tests in outlook pass. In the event log, I get:

How can I make this work so I can have BOTH authenticated and anonymous users (anonymous users only able to send to
accepted domains of course)? Yes, I do have the appropriate checkboxes checked in the receive connector. I have no Edge Transport in the UI to which the help keeps referring to and I would prefer to not have a separate edge server (hard to justify in a small environment).
