Hello,

I have just setup MSExchange server 2003. I would like to use outlook web access from outside the organisation. so users can view/retrieve mail from any computer.
What ports do i need to allow through the router for outlook web acces to work and also what do i type in the browser when outside the organisation. When inside the organisation I type servername\exchange. If outside, do i type the external WAN IP followed by exchange. ie 203.222.xxx.xxx\exchange.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

regards

If you have configured the server to use SSL (i.e. you use https in the URL), then you need to forward port 443.  If not, then you need just port 80.  The WAN IP will certainly work, but the server probably has a public DNS name like mail.yourcompany.com , and you can use that, too.

Does the exchange server have a public external IP address? OR Does the exchange server have an internal private IP address behind the firewall or router? If it is public address, then it should be straight forward. Your internet domain name is probably already pointing to your public IP address in DNS. You can use your internet domain name for access. If your exchange server has a private IP address, then you may need some additional configuring. Depending on your configuration some or all of the settings may already be done. If you are receiving internet mail then at least some ports have a route to the exchange server. You may need to setup rules in your router directing ports to the internal IP address, or one to one NAT setup.

Hello , thanks for your help. I added the ports to the router and it is now working but i am getting a certificate error every time i run internet explorer and type in the address to the server. The address is http://165.228.100.203/exchange

I do not have a public DNS name for the server, When it was installed , it was setup using a local domain name and not a public one. Can this be changed or does the operating system software need to be re installed in order for this to happen.

The name of the server has nothing to do with the name that you use to access the server externally.
If you have a static IP address then you need to get a host setup in your domain to point to it. If you have MX records pointing to the server then you may have a host already.
Then to avoid the certificate error you need to purchase a certificate that matches the host name that you have created. You can get SSL certificates for US$30 from http://DomainsForExchange.net/ which are trusted by most browsers and Windows Mobile devices.
