DAG and DPM backup - 12.May2011 2:07:40 AM

Hi folks!

I have 2-node DAG with 10 databases all active on one node and with passive copy on another. I've set up DPM 2010 full backup on active node and copy backup on passive. Backups work fine, all green in DPM console, but logs aren't being truncated. In evenvwr I see messages that logs will be truncated after they are replayed.

Event 225:
Information Store (8232) TESTDB: No log files can be truncated.

Event 9827:
Exchange VSS Writer (instance 1f52ef90-8e30-4dfb-9dc0-e374163cc432:116) has successfully completed the full or incremental backup of replicated database 'TESTDB'. The log files will be truncated after they have been replayed.

Replication status is Healthy in Exchange...vssadmin list writers is ok on both nodes...On properties of database I see OK time of last full backup - let's say yesterday 11.5. 20:00hrs, but in eventvwr i see this:

Event 4114:
Database redundancy health check passed.
Database copy: TESTDB
Redundancy count: 2

Errors:

Could someone please check their eventvwr - application log and look for latest 4114 event and compare it to properties of that active database to see if last full and incremental time is the same? Also does it correspond to last DPM full backup time?

If any idea why log does not truncate, I'd be gratefull if you share them here...I see lot of people have these issues with log truncation in DAG and DPM, I tried deleting catalog indexes, restarting information store service and it seems that after that logs got deleted (on 9th May) - but after that

I found also that Exchange 2010 keeps 100MB of logs in database cache - since I've migrated only 10 mailboxes to 2010 I have about 250MB of logs for MDB2 which aren't truncated since 9.5.

Thanks for any suggestions in advance!

With total disclaimer as to my experience with DPM, this sounds like a wbadmin volume backup with Exchange 2010 without the "vssfull" checkbox ticked. Seeing as how both use VSS, maybe you have somehow missed something in the job setup in DPM that is causing it to not be a VSSfull backup?

First of all, thank for the reply John!

It seems my logs are being truncated after lets say 3-5 days, so I guess that database cache of 100MB is the reason they aren't truncated right away after full backup. We'll see after more users get migrated, now I don't have so much logs for a few users.
