Hello,

Normally when I do an NT backup of our MS Exchange 2000 Information Stores, it also deletes all of the .log files in the mdbdata directory. For some reason it is not deleting them anymore. Anyone know why this would stop. Also, since NT backup is not deleting them, could I manually delete these files without harming anything through explorer?

Thanks,
Troy

What does your NT Backup log reports tell you ?

You should always let your Exchange aware backup application purge the transaction log files, you should/may never delete them manually...

That doesn't sound good Troy ! [Frown]

It seems like your database has got corrupted somehow, so next step is to check your Event Viewer for any database errors.

So check it and post any errors here.

Henrik,

Here are some of the error messages in the event log, 8012, 474, 12002. 12002 being the most common occurance. Others have told me about trying ESEUTIL or ISINTEG on the database. Do you have any comments on these functions. Or how about moving everything to a new database?

Please let me know...

Thanks again,
Troy

I was asking you to check the Event Viewer first, so that I was sure what problems you were having. And actually my next step was to probably have you run ESEUTIL on the database.

Now I don't know how many mailboxes you got, but if you only have a few, the best thing would be to move the mailboxes to a new database, like you suggest yourself.

If you want to run ESEUTIL (in hope of repairing the database) instead, please let me know.

Henrik,

We have 225 mailboxes. So the ESEUTIL would definately save time if it works. Tonight I am going to shut down the Information Store Service and copy the MDBDATA directory to another location for a backup. I will probably need assistance with the ESEUTIL utility syntax if you are available.

Thanks again,

Troy

Henrik,

I just ran ESEUTIL /G and it returned...

Integrety check completed. Database is CORRUPTED!

So where do I go from here. Will it be possible to fix the database with the ISINTEG -FIX or something like this? If so could you show an example of the syntax to use?

Troy,

You could try to run the ISINTEG -FIX on the database (remember to make a copy first), but based on this error your only solution could be to either restore with a backup from before this error occured, or exmerge the mailboxes and copy them into a new database (if running the standard version of Exchange).

The syntax for running ISINTEG -FIX would be something like:

isinteg -s <serverName> -fix -verbose -l <logFileName> -test <testName>

Also check below resources:

Henrik,

Can you explain how to exmerge the mailboxes and copy them into a new database. Just in case I need to go this route. Here is some info. about our server...

- Server Name: GOLIATH
- OS: Win2k SP4
- Exchange 2000 SP3
- Database location = c:\program files\exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv1.edb

Thanks,

Troy

You export all user mailboxes with the Exmerge utility (included under support on E2K CD), then create a new database and import them in this newly created database.

See more info on how you do this in the middle of below MS KB (applies to Exchange 5.5, but very similar to 2000):

Another option might be creating a new mail store and just moving the mailboxes into it. That way, you don't have to worry about exporting and importing more than you have to. Chances are, you'll find what mailbox is corrupt in the process as well.

We had a similar issue about a year ago, and moving mailboxes from one store to another allowed us to find the one mailbox that had been corrupted. That way, the server kept running and people could still access their mail. Minimal downtime.

Thanks Henrick and atguilmette!

All the information you provided has been very helpful. I am going to attempt to correct this problem tomorrow (12/20/2003). I will let you know how it goes.

Also Henrick, the video on the -1018 error was especially helpful. I got alot out of that presentation.

Ok here's what happened.

1) I ran the eseutil /p, finished OK
2) then I ran the eseutil /d, finished OK
3) Turned back on the Info. Store Service and ran a NT Backup, finished OK & deleted the log files.

Everything appears to be working fine [Big Grin] . I'm glad I did not have to recreate the database and move over all the mailboxes. Yeah!

Thanks again for all the information. You have been very helpful. And have a [Smile] Happy Holiday!
