Hi All
Disaster struck today when 2 of the 3 disks (including the boot disk) in my Raid5 died today. Windows 2000 Server running Exchange 2000.

I will have some new disks tomorrow and will have to begin from the ground up. Its been a long time since I installed Exchange so that will be a challenge in itself. The thing I could really do with some help on is how to restore my backup. I've never been in this situation before, its always been clean install, in place upgrade and some corrupt database repairs but never a full on disaster recovery!

I use BackupExec 9 and have both files copies from the Exchange box and Exchange specific copies courtesy of the BE Exchange Agent. Can anyone steer me in the right direction for using the backup stuff once I have reinstalled everything..?

Cheers

Molds

Exchange is Member server or a Domain Controller??

What kind of backup we have in place Offline or Online ??

Is your Active directory is in place ?

Steps to follow

  •  Reset the computer account (exchange server name) in AD.
  • Note:- you will not delete that object.
  • Bring the new server and make that server as a member server.
  • Install all prerequisites for Exchange (eg. IIS).
  • Make a note of Drive Letters what you had before and Make sure you have the same Drive letters now.
  • Insert the Exchange server 2000 media.
  • Go to run and run the setup with Setup.exe /disasterrecovery
  • Once that is finished then install Service Pack 3 with the Same switch Update.exe /disasterrecovery
  • Apply August rollup patch
  • http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=363a57a4-8bed-4bbb-bbe4-abc11ab04611&displaylang=en
  • Then perform a restore of the database.

Now I am assuming that everything is in place.
Please let me know if you have any trouble following the above steps.

Thanks for the reply.

Exchange is Member Server.
Backup is tape based and available locally on the network.
AD is fine, I have two separate DCs.

Ah, OK top tip here then is to use the /disasterrecovery switch!

The last step syays to perform the restore... Is there any more detail you can offer me on that? Do I simply run a Restore Job from Backup Exec and the stuff the BE Exchange Agent backed up gets dropped back into place? Won't I get agro from Exchange because of the new DB or does it install without one having used the /disasterrecovery switch..?

Come on Mr Courier man, bring me my new disks! :-)

***I do not have the System State available from my backup :(

System state is important only incase of a DC crashed.

Now in your case its a member server. Simply perform a disasterrecovery and then perform a normal restore.

Assuming that your backup is good and your restore will succeed.

After a whole morning of fighting the good fight with BackupExec I have finally got my First Storage Group restored, consistency checked and re mounted!

Hurrah for that bit.

But I am having real trouble with getting any mail to process through the MTA - I cant even email local accounts let alone send out. Grrrr, it all looks OK but something is not right with the routing somewhere but the Event messages are good for nothing :(

Another long night coming up...
