I am running a fully patched E2k OWA (single server) w/SSL behind a PIX firewall(fixup disabled for SMTP) and it has been working fine until recently when some users started losing access i.e. they now get access denied 401 errors.

Unsuccessful in locating the cause or fix so far.

You say some users? So its working fine for others? Have you tried to recreate the problem?

Have any more details? More details! [Smile]

That's part of the problem, eventlogs and such are providing no clues as to why a handful of my users are denied access. A review of permissions yielded no clues. All are using IE6. I used to run into a very similar problem with OWA 5.5, but that was a long time ago and I don't recall how those were fixed.

Hmmm... Ok, so it was working fine but users are now getting 401/denied errors.

You mentioned a PIX so I assume you are you are referring to external customers/users. Curious what happens internally?

I may be stating the obvious here but have you looked the PIX to see if any changes have been or were made since the last time everything was working? Are you the only one with access to it? Make sure you have port 443 open for SSL.

Also when users go to the site (https://???/exchange) are they getting prompted for SSL, accepcting the cert I mean?

Some users are denied access internally and externally. Something is a awry with exhange. For example my account works fine, but my assistant's does not, even though we are using the same procedure, from the same locations.

Check the Security Policy's for the Servers.
The OWA users need to have the right "Access this Computer from the Network". I usually give the Domian Users and above this right.

THey have the access this computer from the network privilege already. Their Outlook XP works fine. Also a review of eventlogs, merely indicate a username or password error, which is false. The IIS logs only indicate a 401 error. Users only get a http/1.1 401 Unauthroized message. I have been through every related TechNet article without success. TechNet has been useless for this issue.

Any thoughts or suggestions? I am considering rebuilding OWA.

Rob
