Hi all. My Exchange 2K db is getting close to its limit. (I'm at 16.01GB) I had the mailbox manager process delete a bunch of mail and it sent me a report stating it deleted 55MB. The event that was logged said 5506.4MB (5.5GB) So I ran the ESEUTIL /D (again) and I'm not getting the databases to shrink much. I looked at the 1221 event this AM for the on-line defrag results and it said only 3MB free.
Could something be wrong with my database or is it just too full?
Thanks in advance!

If Event 1221 says 3MB then it sounds like your EDB databases simply is full, you might want to consider upgrading to the Enterprise edition then.

You might want to check in ESM and find which mailboxes are the biggest and either drop some emails to PST locally or with exmerge.

Thanks for the info. That's what I've been doing as well as having Mailbox Manager delete all mail older than 30 days from [Sent Items]. It said it freed 1.5GB. I ran the defrag and didn't get any of it back!
Any other ideas that may work?
When I look at db size, I need to add the .edb & .stm files to get total size, correct?
Thanks a bunch!

OK. I had to call MS on this. I had to change the retention time to 0 days, make the on-line defrag run FIRST and then run the eseutil /d (off-line defrag).
Seems you must do it in that order.

Brian,
As we are running into a similar issue, how did you force the online defrag to run? Or did you just wait until after it ran @ 2 in the morning?

Bill, You need to change the schedule to run earlier, give it about a 2hr span to run in and wait for it to complete. (look in the event log for the completion notice)
Hope this helps!

Brian,
I can't seem to get the online defrag to run correctly. I tried setting it for 9:15am this morning and nothing happened. I am trying again to run it @ 10 and giving it until 2:00pm to run. Was that what I was doing wrong? Do I have to give it a span of time to run in?
Also, if I have just about (as in 2-3 gigs over) the size of the db as space on the drive, will the offline still run correctly?

Yes. It need a lot of time to run, especially if the system is being used.
I will only free up space in the already allocated db space...no extra disc space is needed unless you do the off-line defrag...then you need 110% of your db space free to run that.
Filter your event log for first this event ID 700. This is the start (should say something like:
"Information Store (2768) Online defragmentation is beginning a full pass on database 'D:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv1.edb'."
Then later, filter for event ID 701. This is it being completed:
Information Store (2768) Online defragmentation has completed a full pass on database 'D:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv1.edb'.
Then filter for event ID 1221. This is the status:
The database "First Storage Group\Mailbox Store (your server name here)" has 17 megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has terminated.
Mine used to take a few hours to run when the dbs were full. Now it takes 50 minutes.
Good luck and Post your results!
