Hi,

I won't recommand installing the edge transport on your DC. The Edge Transport uses the ADAM to look in the AD.

So try installing it on a server with AD installed on it.

Thanks for your reply Jveldh,
But I thought Edge Transport cannot coexist in the same server of exchange. That's why I installed Edge Transport on the other server. I already tried it and it does not allowed me to install Edge Transport on coexist server with exchange 2007.

I will promo back my Edge Transport server as domain member or Workgroup.
Any other suggestions and advice are very appreciated.

Jamaliah,

It's correct that you can't install it on th exchange 2007 server itself. But what I meant was that you should not install the Edge Server on a DC. This server also does not have to be a member of the AD. If it is in a workgroup it's fine. The Edge is most times placed in a DMZ.

Thanks for your advice. I'm actually fairly new with exchange.

I'm still keep asking what is the purpose of  Edge Transport actually? And I'm going to try send email to and from internet. My sending email internally through exchange user looks fine.

In order to do that, do I need Edge Transport to enable my sending email to internet? Or can I just do that with Exchange server only?

Hi,
You can mailflow with the Internet without the edge server.
The edge server is designed to sit on your network perimeter (or DMZ) and its main purpose is to look after message hygiene i.e. spam filtering and with the help of Forefront, malware scanning. It's designed to reject the majority of undesirable traffic before in enters your private netowork.
However, a single exchange server on your LAN can still take care of message hygiene etc. Many small companies run a single exchange configuration.

Cheers,
TXB2

For more information about the Edge Transport Role:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-au/library/aa996562(EXCHG.80).aspx
http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2006/09/12/428880.aspx

Like TXB2 said, it depends on how big is your company and do you really need it?  Other responsibilities of the Edge Transport Role are antivirus and anti-spam protection for your Exchange.

Hi,

My current working place is about 600 users. It's a factory. I think it's quite big and it is a best way to set up Edge Transport for Exchange protectian.
What's your opinion?

Yeah, I would split up the roles for 600+ envorinment. But at the end of the day it's all about what your budget allows..
I recommend you get Forefront for your Exchange malware protection too

Hi,

If I were you I would install an Edge server not specificly to the group of users but just to build in an extra layer of security.

jveldh,

Yeah I think I will build in Edge as an extra security for my exchange.
Previously, I installed Edge on DC and I found a lot of errors. But after I demote the server as stand alone server, everythings looks fine. Especially my Infromation service and Attendant service now automatically started. Thanks a lot for your advice.

Hi Everybody!

I already reinstalled my Edge Transport and now I can send mail to and from exchange and to Internet but Failed to reply from Internet to exchange.
My current send connectors on Edge Transport are :
1) EdgeSync - default-first-site-name to Internet
2) EdgeSync - inbound to default-first-site-name

So, do I need to create the Outbound send connector in order to allow reply from Internet to my exchange?

Hi,

You need to ensure that you have a receive connector for the specified domain. The second step if creating the send connectors on the edge transport server to send mail to the Hub Transport server.

Yeah, all done. Only which server should I set the external IP address so that mail can send from Internet to exchange?

Is it Edge Transport server or Exchange server?

thanks

Hi,

You should do this on the Edge server.
Normally this is placed in a DMZ which also secures your environment more then directly connecting the other roles to the internet.

hello anyone...

well, i have tried set my gateway and external ip address at Edge Transport server.
But the message status is Failed. When I checked, and im wonder why it's point the mail to my exchange server? though i never set the gateway or external IP address there.

I was thinking why...any idea?

(might be my firewall setting too..)

hello....

i think i already detect the problem. Everything looks okay now (in terms of the connection). Just my firewall did not response to my Edge Transport server. It could be the firewall setting that setted by vendor. This is because I connect my test server in actual production LAN. Therefore, I have to ask my vendor whether are they setted the IP address directly to the current exchange server used (exch 5.5).

I will update here soon!

cheers
