From my understanding, the Edge Transport Server Role is optional, is this true?  I currently have a non windows server (Unix) handling my external SMTP requests for sending mail.  I would like to continue using this server for external communications.  The question I have is, how do I set this up with Exchange 07?  Does anyone have any good documentation?

Thanks,
James

What we're doing in our environment is "hanging" our Exchange environment off our existing UNIX environment; any email entering or leaving Exchange has to pass through our UNIX systems.

In our setup we have our Edge Transport talking directly to the UNIX SMTP server, using anonymous authentication. So long as the UNIX server accepts the connection you should be good to go.
