When trying to send emails to a particular domain all my users are getting the message returned with the following statement This is the sender program at **mydomain**.com. I am sorry I wasn't able to deliver your message. See reason below. Error: delivery failed **user**@**domain.com** - Permanent Failure: MX Lookup failed: error looking up IP for host **recipient IP address** Running Exchange 2003 with no external DNS servers configured. Any ideas?

Try an nslookup on the domain and check for an MX record - if that exists, see if you can resolve the server name to an IP address.

The NS lookup results on the domain name point to the server where the emails are hosted from. Also when pinging the mail.domainname.com it also returns the same IP address. For some reason the email address will except mail from all other accounts apart from this one.

Are you running NSLOOKUP on the Exchange mailbox server? Is the DNS server that responds inside your environment, or is it external to your environment? What happens if you telnet to the name? What happens if you telnet to the address?

Can you verify that you have your FQDN set in your SMTP VS? 1. Open Exchagne System Manager. Navigate to Administrative Groups, Site, Servers, Servername, Protocols, SMTP, Default SMTP Virtual Server, 2. Highlight Default SMTP Virtual Server, right click properties. 3. Go to the Delivery Tab, and click Advanced Button. 4. In the "Fully-qualified domain name: field, enter your fully qualified external domain name. Click Check DNS to verify that it resolves. 5. Restart SMTP service.

The DNS server address you list is internal (private address). What type of system resides at that address? Is it a Windows server? A router? A firewall? Just to confirm, when performing the telnet tests, you're forcing the session on port 25, correct? In other words: telnet mxrecordname.domain.com 25 telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 25
