Question: I would like to enable Active Sync. I'm hoping I can get feedback to start me in the right direction.  I have two iPhone users and we would like to take advantage of EAS for complete wireless push and pull performance.

We have the security in place to analyze 443 traffic.

Some general concerns?
Do I need to create a certificate for SSL traffic?
How do I enable EAS?

What are appropriate steps to get Active Sync to work with iPhone?

Yes you will need to get a certificate for SSL traffic. We have a few people at work that are using iPhones with exchange. Couldnt work out what was going wrong until we obtained a certificate for it to authenticate properly.

Before you start using the flawed implementation of ActiveSync that Apple have provided, I suggest that you get it to work with Windows Mobile first. You can use the emulator to do that, which will allow you to easily reset the device time and time again.

A trusted SSL certificate should be used, otherwise you have no security and usernames and passwords are sent across in the clear. Although on current evidence of the iPhone's "security" that is probably the least of your worries.
I have a quick guide on how to setup Exchange 2003 on my web site here: http://www.amset.info/exchange/mobile-setup.asp

The SSL certificate will also be available for OWA and RPC over HTTPS, if you wish to support those as well.

Simon.
