First - are you sure about this OS level?

OS - Windows 2000 Server SP2

SP2 on Windows 2000 is very old.
Hopefully you mean Windows 2003 SP2.

Do you have any Exchange 5.5 servers? If not then you don't need SRS. Remove it. That will get rid of some of the errors.

The backup looks like it is being interrupted. AV software scanning something that it shouldn't do can do that. You have said that you are using Norton AV. That is the first place I would be looking at for the cause of the problem and as a first instance would recommend the removal of it. Disabling it is not enough. My stance on Norton AV may seem harsh, but it comes from experience - where Symantec AV is installed more often than not that is the cause of the problem.

Simon.

I don't have any 5.5. I will remove SRS and see if the issue is resolved or not.

I would suggest that you update everything. Run Microsoft Update (not Windows Update) so that it updates Windows, Exchange etc.
I would also suggest running the Exchange best practises tool on the server afterwards to see what else is missing.

Simon.

Ok this is what I did so far...

Uninstalled AV.
Ran MS update not windows
Ran the Best practise tool too...it warned me that no backup was done ever and warned me about the page file size.

Still the issue exists. ntbackup failed with the same errors. The problem is the log files are filling up. Any other ideas?

Which errors are occurring now.
What are you backing up to? Disk, tape?
How large is the store?
How long has this server been in production?
Are there any errors in the event viewer regarding storage, disks etc?

Simon.

I am backing it up to a Disk drive

17691 MB - Size of the store

No errors in the event viewer regarding storage, disks.

I think from the logfiles the server was in production since Feb 2007.

As the store is only 17gb and it is Enterprise edition, I know what I would be looking to do, as my instinct says there is something wrong with the database.

Create a new Storage Group, with the database and logs in a new directory.
Then move the mailboxes to that new Storage Group and confirm a backup works. Once confirmed and you have a good backup, enable circular logging on the original store to flush out the logs, then drop the store and restart the server.

Is maintenance completing correctly on the database? Look for event ID 1221 overnight, which mentions free space (aka white space).

Simon.

Simon...thank you so much and sorry for delayed response. I created a new storage group and migrated all the users to that group...no issues there. Apparently the hard disk had issues and when backing up the store caused the problems in this case.
